These injuries left him handicapped his entire life.He grew up very sensitive about his injuries, as they affected hisface, producing disfigurement and a speech impediment. He waseconomically dependent on members of his family.
He lived with his father in Pioche, and after his father's death livedmany years with his brother Dan. They were both bachelors and Ottoaccompanied his brother on the move to Oregon in the 1950's.

1880 Federal Census lists Otto , age 23, single, occupation miner.
Otto Benjamin grew up on a farm near Cuba, Missouri. He attendedMissouri School of Mines and moved to Colorado with his family wherethere was considerable activity in mining. He was considered aqualified mining engineer in those days because of his educationalbackground. He was actively engaged at Leadville, Victor and CrippleCreek, all legendary mining centers. His work took him to Kingman andGoldbug, Arizona, and to the Black Hills of South Dakota. He was thesuperintendent of the Clover Leaf Gold Mining Company.
Among Otto's possessions was an invitation issued to Mr. and Mrs. OttoAmsden, to attend the inaugural Ball of President Theodore Rooseveltin March 1904. His daughter, Lucinda, evidently accompanied herparents to Washington, for she received and saved an invitation to areception and tea given as one of the inaugural festivities.
About 1912, he had moved from Colorado probably to Arizona, accompanied by his sons and his unmarried sister, Alice Amsden.Lucinda had married the previous year, so Alice became the housekeeperfor his family. Otto moved to Pioche, Nevada about 1916. There heand his son Dan, owned and operated a garage. Amelia, Otto's widowedmother moved to Pioche in 1921 to join Otto's family. Two years laterOtto died, preceding his mother by three years. Both are buried in afamily plot in the town's only cemetery.
