[434]
Isaac Amsden is the father of the Amsden family in America. Hismarriage to Frances Perriman is the first recorded history of thefamily in America, and appears in the Cambridge Records, June 8, 1654.
[593]
Copeland supplied birth and death data.
[225]
Isaac and Abby lived in East Hampton, MA
[30]
Isaac probably removed from Marlborough after having three daughtersborn there as there is no further record of him there or anyone of hisfamily after 1726. Murray M. Brown, Some Descendents of Isaac Amsdenof Cambridge Massachusetts, (1934).
Isaac's marriage to Frances Perriman is recorded by Bailey, Fredric,Early Massachusetts Marriages Prior to 1800, p. 13.
Isaac's name spelled Isacke Amsden, appears in the inventory of theestate of Nathaniel Sparhawk, who died June 27, 1647. This fact wouldindicate Isaac had arrived in the colonies prior to that date.
Administration papers of Isaac's estate indicate that he owned land onthe south side of the river to the extent of 12 acres. We can assumethis to be the Charles River. Isaac followed the trade of a mason atCambridge.
Several theories exist about Frances and Isaac. Some genealogistsconjecture that she is the daughter of John Perriman, but Dr. Savage, historian states her father is unknown. Jacob and Isaac, theirchildren, were both baptized November 03. 1661, and Frances wasadmitted to full communion and fellowship on October 21, 1661. Thiswas after Isaac's death. Frances remarried in 1663 to Richard Cutter,a widower with 8 children, and had seven additional children . TheseCutter children will, in later generations, marry back into the Amsdenfamily. Murray M. Brown, Some Descendents of Isaac Amsden ofCambridge Massachusetts, (1934).
The theory today is that John Amsden of Hatfield and Deerfield , isalso a son of Isaac . Dr. Savage writes that John Amsden of Hatfield, may have been a son of Isaac's by a wife before Frances, or before hesettled in America. Some descendants claim that the family in Americabegan with three brothers from England, but no truth of this theoryhas ever surfaced. It is true that the majority of Amsdens in theUnited States today, are descendants of Isaac and Frances throughtheir son Isaac, and through Isaac's son, John, of Hatfield. Theyoungest son, Jacob, had no children. In genealogy circles, Amsdendescendents are known to be from the " Isaac branch or John branch".Research has shown that a few Amsden families migrated down fromCanada into Grant Co. Wisconsin in the mid 1800's, the exact localeand time that John Amsden's descendents (Lyman Amsden) arrived inGrant County. Amsden's from the UK and Australia have also immigratedto the United States, but in very small numbers.
The following appeared in " A Genealogical Dictionary of The FirstSettlers of New England, Three Generations of Those Who Came Before1692, on the Basis of Farmer's Register, Vol. 1".
"Amsden, Isaac, Cambridge, married 8 June 1654, Frances Perriman, whose family is unknown had Isaac, born 1656; and Jacob, 17 Nov. 1657;both bapt. 3 Nov. 1661, the mother being admitted of the church a fewdays before and he died 7 April 1659, if we take Harris's Epit. 169,for conclusive; but we might judge from Protestant records wheremention of admission given 25 June 1661, to his widow that he had diedonly 19 days before. The widow married 14 Feb. 1663, Richard Cutter.Isaac, Cambridge, son. of the precedent married 17 May 1677, JaneRutter, perhaps daughter of John of Sudbury, had Elizabeth born 3 Feb.following and I know no more. Jacob, Cambridge, son of Isaac thefirst, died 11 June 1701, as we learn from Harris, 29, and anythingelse is learn from nobody. John, Hatfield, Cambridge, or came fromEngland there this man lived 10 yrs. but at Hatfield died 1696,leaving Jacob and Isaac . The latter died young, and the formerresided at Deerfield, where he was drown 1742, and two of his sonswere killed by the Indians 1746. Descendants may be found there.Matchless Mitchell spells the name Embsden".
Isaac Amsden died in Cambridge, Massachusetts 1659 and is buried inthe Cambridge Commons Cemetery at Harvard University. The data usedhere and for the Amsden family continuation is composed from severalsources. One record gives his birth as about 1628.
In an E-mail dated Apr 18 2000, Peter Amsden wrote:
"Anne wrote: Isaac (Israel) Amsden d. 6-6-1661 married FrancesPerriman 6-8-1654 (2 children: Isaac Jr. , Jacob"
All of what Anne writes is most interesting, and I will leave it tothose who have studied the American history in greater depth toanswer, but this last statement intrigues me.
This is the second time in the last few days that I have seen Isaacreferred to as Israel. Is there any evidence for this?
I have Isaac as having died 7 Apr 1659 Cambridge MA - which of thesetwo date are correct? Evidence?
It is almost certain that Isaac was married previously to an Elizabeth(?) Possibly before he went to the Americas. We do not know whathappened to her, but they had a son John who gave rise to an entirelydifferent branch of the Amsden family in America. It is within thisbranch that I find Ralph Emerson Sn and Jn. neither of these appear tohave married Emma Crump, so there is either a confusion here oranother Ralph Emerson that I have never come across, although thatwould seem like a remarkable coincidence.
It should also be remembered that data relating to the first Isaacprior to his marriage to Frances Perriman is, at best, sketchy. Theonly reason why the Isaac appearing in Colchester England and the onewho married Frances appear connected is that that the Colchester Isaacis the only one that has been found in England and the dates fit. There is no other evidence at this time that they were one and thesame person.
Those choosing to include Isaac in their family histories should makethis clear, or we shall end up with another historical 'fact' thatjust maybe nothing of the sort. For more on this please see my webpage (below) and go to the American Connection page.

Some data from Roth with source, Some Descendants of Isaac Amsden ofCambridge, Mass., compiled and copyright 1934 by Murray M. Brown andAncestors and Descendants of Jonathan Nichols Amsden and Amelia JaneSmith 1636-1977 and their Related Families of Colonial America, copyright 1978 by Bernice Amsden Warnick. Roth supplied copies ofboth books.
Taken from Brown's book - "Isaac and Jacob, were both baptised thethird of November 1661. Their mother Frances, was admitted to fullcommunion and fellowship on October 21, 1661.
It is thought that John Amsden of Hatfield and Deerfield was also ason of Isaac and Frances Amsden despite the fact that some of thedecendants claim that the family in America was founded by threebrothers. What would seem to be the best explanation is that thefather Isaac who died so early in life was forgotten by the sons. Dr.Savage writes that John of Hatfield may have been a son of Isaac by awife before Frances or before he settled in America. If he was the sonof Isaac, which is most likely, he was probably born very early.
We know from the administration papers of Isaac's estate that he ownedland on the South side of the river to the extent of twelve acres, andmost likely this was the Charles River. These papers also show that hefollowed the trade of Mason at Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Isaac Amsden died at Cambridge, Masachusetts on April 7, 1659."
Lewis gives an approximate birth year as used here.
The following E-mail was received Apr. 25, 1998 from Christine Amsden(camsden@escape.ca) concerning the Amsden name and line.
Hello again.
You are very welcome to any information I have, which, on the US side,is not much. I would be more than happy to photocopy the crest etc andmail such information as I have, if you would like to provide yoursnail mail address. I do not personally expect acknowledgement, sinceI was only one of the contributors to the collection of Amsden info.for the UK book. When the Amsden researchers started, some 15 or soyears ago, there were few Amsdens listed in the telephone directoriesfor the whole of the British Isles and there is a good chance they areall related. Unfortunately, very early records in Britain areoccasionally missing (war damage etc) or even non-existent. It wouldseem some of the earliest families were Baptists, who apparently werenot the best at keeping records. The compiler of the Brit book isPeter Amsden who lives now at Penrith and he is now on the internet. Ithink if anyone should be credited, it should be him, though you arewelcome to mention my name. Peter's email is
"The Origin of the Name
So far the earliest records found for the spelling 'Amsden' comes fromWing in Buckinghamshire where Ralphe Amsden, son of Thomas Amsden wasbaptised on 10th December, 1547. On the 24th January 1548 Edmond wasbaptised and on 31st July, 1549 Mary was baptised.
Later we find Joyce Amsden (father John) being baptised at Woburn inBedfordshire on 27th October, 1562.
The first records found for the London area are for the marriage ofWilliam Amsden to Elizabeth Richardson on 17th October, 1583.
The Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire Amsdens are most interestingbecause parish records from those parts of the country show there tobe several families over succeeding years. At least until 1782 inBuckinghamshire and 1843 in Bedfordshire. Of course, it would be wrongto assume that these families represent a continuing line, but it doesshow that Amsdens flourished in those parts. Records for them inWarwickshire have been found dating from 1580; in Oxfordshire from1580; Gloucestershire - 1601; Worcestershire -1621 and Leicestershire- 1593. Apart from London, the rest of the country seems to haveescaped their attentions for some long time."
My husbands family has only been in Yorkshire (Wensleydale) for 3generations. Richard's grandfather was sent to 'learn farming' - andstayed. Interestingly, he came from a place called Tring inBedfordshire.
"The American Connection
Before contacting and meeting decendants of the family in the States, information on their origins there was scant. We knew that somemembers of the family immigrated to the States in the early 1900's,but the study of American bibliographies, etc. revealed that they werethere long before that time. Many of them becoming noted people intheir specialised fields. One Amsden built a railroad, another planneda town and another was considered America's leading authority on blastfurnaces. There have been chemists, teachers and anthropologists. ACaptain Amsden fought in the Civil War and New England records showthem farming there in the 1700's. Not surprisingly the early settlersbecame involved in disputes with the Indians and after the assaults onFort Massachusetts in 1746 one Luce Bijah, the Negress wife of AlizjahPrince (a servant) wrote this poem:-
August, 'twas the twenty fifth,
Seventeen hundred forty six,
The Indians did in ambush lay,
Some very valiant men to slay,
The names of whom I'll not leave out,
Samuel Allen like a hero fout,
And though he was so brave and bold,
His face shall we no more behold.
Oliver Amsden he was slain,
Which caused his friends much grief and pain,
Simon Amsden they found dead,
Not many rods distance from his head.
Contact was eventually made with Clarence F. Amsden of 2009, YaleAvenue, Dunedin, Florida and he kindly provided a copy of his historyof the Amsden family in America. In this he draws extensively from theMSS of Murray M. Brown "Some Descendants of Isaac Amsden of Cambridge,Massachusetts," written in 1934. From this the following passage isquoted:-
"Isaac Amsden was the first of the Amsden family in America. It is notcertain the year he came from the old country. According to theCambridge, Massachusetts records and Paige's "History of Cambridge",
The Hatfield and Deerfield referred to are small towns also inMassachusetts, some 70 miles from Boston.
It is clear from this passage that the history before that recordedfoe Isaac has yet to be unravelled. Certainly we have, so far,uncovered no records in England for anyone of that name and it isunderstood that a fairly extensive search of ships' lists, etc. datingfrom around 1640 has also revealed nothing. As futher evidence ofIsaac's origins though we find in the "Genealogy and Recorded Facts ofthe Ancestors of Harri Amsden" (a hand written document dated 1900 inthe archives of Montpellier Historical Library, Vermont, USA) thefollowing passage;
"Isaac Amsden came to America from England......".
Murray Brown's MSS also contains the following enigmatic statement;
"In the old English records mention is made in the disposal ofproperty of a silver hilted rapier bearing an inscription in Englishwhich has been handed down from father to son. Unfortunately this hasbeen lost. If it could ever be found, it might prove a great deal."
It might indeed, but since Mr. Brown is no longer with us we may neverknow to which ".. old English records..." he refers.
The one person whom we know that Isaac must have had contact withoutside his family was Nathaniel Sparhawk since he is mentioned inNathaniel's estate. Sparhawk is another unusual name and it was feltworthwhile investigating to see if Sparhawk appeared in any Englishrecords. 'Sparhawk' was not found, but it was discovered that the nameSparrow-Hawk was not uncommon in Oxfordshire during the 16th & 17thcent., and that Amsdens and Sparrow-Hawks had lived in the samevillages. It seems highly likely that 'Sparhawk' is a corruption, either accidentally or on prupose, and that the two families wereacquainted before their move to America. THat neither of these paoplehave turned up in parish records for that period is not verysurprising. Most likely they were Puritans and had no dealings withthe established church. This is a very commonly found gap in churchrecords for that period.
As a further point of interest there is a small township called Amsdenin Vermont, the Ladies of which wrote the "Amsden Cook Book",published by R.S. Warner at Ludlow, Vermont in 1909. The town wasfounded by some prosperous Amsdens many years ago and was clearly anactive place in the past. Now it is almost a 'lost' village with a fewscattered buildings and an empty store".
Please bear in mind that this was written for Brits. Quotes from "TheHistory of the Amsden Family," by Peter C. Amsden.
The arms are of simple design, a factor often associated with those ofgreat antiquity. The Cross was an emblem frequently used by thoseengaging in The Crusades and if the motto "Sub cruce floreo" isequally ancient it may seem to reinforce this assumption. That thearms contain wings is also of interest when one remembers that ourearliest records of Amsdens are from Wing in Buckinghamshire, 1547. Itwas not uncommon for arms to make some play on words and if theAmsdens flourished at Wing for some time then here is another avenuefor investigation.
Arms: Argent, a chevron between three wings sinister, gules.
Crest; A Cross flory fitchee or, fleury gules, between two wingsproper.
The shield is silver with a red chevron.
The three sinister (or left) wings are red in colour.
The crest is a gold cross flory (the terminals are shaped likefleur-de-lis); fitchee (the bottom arm pointed); fleury gules(scattered with red fleur-de-lis)
Between two greyish coloured wings.
The Mantle (design around the shield) is red and silver.
A picture would probably tell you more
The rest of the book basically shows the trees of the variousbranches, and gives more on the crest and its use. One thing whichdoes appear in most branches, is repetition of names. I think Peterhas obtained more leads since this publication, and has sufficient toproduce a new book. I lived in Yorkshire at the time of the lastpublication, but now live in Manitoba.

Note from McLeester - The poem by Luce Bijah above is repeated in it'sentirety at John Amsden, Jr. Roth writes that Isaac evidently hadboarders, one of which was Daniel Farrabes who married RebeccaPerriman. There is speculation that Rebecca was sister to Frances.
The unknown spouse of Isaac is most likely John's mother. It is notknown if this marriage occurred in England or the Colonies.
Simms notes that death date may have been in June 1659.
Copeland notes that his name has appeared as Israel.
