Jacob died at a fairly young age of 44, and Mary carried on runningthe farm and raised her children alone. Records show she madeconsiderable purchases of land, and it could be assumed she had alarge amount of money for the times.
Will of Mary Amsden Petersham, Ma.March 28, 1797
Mary Amsden of Petersham in the county of Worcester, widow beingadvanced in years and under indisposition of body, but of sounddisposing mind and memory have thought it fit to settle the worldlyestate God has blessed me with in the following manner, but first ofall I recommend my Soul to God in Christ my body to the earth todecent Christian burial in hopes of a joyful resurrection.
First I give to my son Thomas Amsden the house and the improvement ofthe improved land I bought of Edward Clark during his natural life.Sally the poorest feather bed and also one quarter part of my indoormovables not otherwise disposed of.
Second I give to the heirs of my son Thomas Amsden thirteen acres anda half of land I bought of Edward Clark lying in the southwesterlypart of Petersham to them and their heirs and assigns forever theimprovement of the house and improved land reserved for the saidThomas during his natural life as above mentioned.
Thirdly I give my three sons Bezaleel Amsden, Jacob Amsden, and JoelAmsden the remainder of my real and personal estate not otherwisedisposed to them and their heirs and assign to be divided equallybetween Bezaleel Amsden, Jacob Amsden and Joel Amsden.
Fourth I give to me son Bezaleel my best feather bed and one warmingpan.
Fifth I give to my granddaughter Polly Amsden, daughter of ThomasAmsden my chest of drawers.
Sixth I constitute my son Bezaleel Amsden sole executor to this mylast will and testament he to receive my just credits and pay my justdebts and funeral charges out of my personal estate. And I do makeand ordain this to be my last will and testament and I do revoke anddisavow all other wills before made ratifying and confirming this andno other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I haveset my hand and seal the day and year above mentioned.

In Jefferson, March 13th, 1870, after a short illness, Clarissa, wifeof S.C. Amsden, aged 50 years. She leaves a husband and large family,to mourn her loss.
