Ashtabula Sentinel 23 February 1899
Samuel Amsden of Jefferson died at his late residence on Erie streetSaturday night, Feb. 11, consumption being the cause of his death. Mr.Amsden was born in Ashtabula, OH, June 1822. He came to Jefferson in1840, where he has been a resident until his death. He was united inmarriage to Miss Clarissa Hubbard of Cherry Valley in 1844, to themwere born ten children of whom, seven now survive, Mrs. Theresa Wescotof Geneva, PA, Mrs. Maria Wood of Ashtabula, OH, Arthur Amsden ofAndover, OH, Philo, Asa, and Rilla Amsden of this village. His wifedied March 13, 1870; he was again united to Mrs. Lucinda Williams ofDorset in 1871 who is still living. "Sam" was well known through thispart of the country, being a good blacksmith here for nearly sixtyyears; his four remaining boys are conducting blacksmith shops, A.C. Court records show that Samuel's guardianship was given to a JacobFoster, coal dealer, May 13, 1842. This act was assented to by hismother Nancy, who had married Joseph Ludas Nov. 8, 1831. Samuel andSarah had a daughter.

Last Rites for R.S. Amsden, 76 Resident of Jefferson Many Years TookLife With Shotgun
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon from the M.E.Church for Riley S. Amsden, 76, pioneer resident of Jefferson, who wasfound dead in his home on West Jefferson Street early Friday morning.
Mr. Amsden's body was found on a chair in his living room. He died ofa gunshot wound in his chest, self inflicted with a 12 gauge shotgun.Coroner C.C. Webster, returned the verdict of suicide and said thatMr. Amsden died about 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon. He had beendespondent since the death of his wife last February.
