Arthur Tibbets Amsden was born in Oronoco, MN 1859, to Lyman and MariaJane Davis Amsden. After residing with his family in Wisconsin andIowa, he located in Brown Co., SD, in the Spring of 1881. He was ahomesteader on the southwest of 1/4 section 4, Township 122, Range 61,with three horses, a wagon, and a breaking plow. When he located, theonly landmark of Groton was the side track before the rails were laid. His shanty was of sod and his horses were staked on the prairie. Artand Lyman William his father, homesteaded on the Corner, west ofJames Cemetery, and brought the first threshing machine into the areain 1881, a horse driven rig, purchased in Watertown, SD. Theyharvested for settlers along the way between Watertown and BrownCounty, and in the local area. During the winter of 1881-82, Art tookhis team and cut wood in the North Woods of Wisconsin until spring, when he returned and planted 20 acres of wheat and corn. His firstcrop of wheat yielded 26 bushels per acre.
Joe Herron, Art's brother-in-law, mentions "the Amsden boys" as beingin Vernon County Wisconsin, in Nov. 1881 through early spring 1882, soat least one of Art's brothers must have accompanied him there.Family history related that he met his wife to be, Rachel Herron,Joe's sister, at this time. Rachel was a teacher in Vernon County.Joe Herron and Art were located on neighboring claims in Hanson Twp.,Brown County. Art on section 4 and Joe on section 8.
Joe Herron in his diary refers to William Lyman Amsden, Art's father,as living closer to Groton than the others, for he always picked upthose who came in on the train, and transported them to theirrespective homes. Joe also mentions Art's brother's Ed , Elmer andWilliam Oscar. Marie Amsden, a descendent of Will states there wasalso a brother Parke. (Marie also gave more information to the authorof this article, however it is in error, so I will not include ithere. Lynn Roth).
Groton history relates that Art erected a house for himself andRachel in 1883. A residence 14 x 22 ft. is said to have been one ofthe best in the area at that time. It later became the kitchen of thebigger dwelling, which was a popular gathering place for the youngpeople of the day.
Art also purchased land in neighboring Day County, where he pasturedcattle in the summer. Amsden Dam and Amsden Lake are named for himwhen he donated 57 acres for the dam construction.
Art's son, Albert, states that Art was the oldest male in his family, but never talked about the others. Albert does remember a cousinnamed Percy, who came from Iowa during the summer to help harvest."Dad's sister Emma Olive married a Sterns and homesteaded severalmiles south of our place. Our old home still stands, but is gettingpretty rocky. No one has lived there since George's death in 1964".
For those of you who are not familiar with the area of Brown County,SD, refer to the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, known as the "LittleHouse " series. Her father, Charles Ingalls, and her future husband,Almanzo Wilder, both pioneered in De Smet, SD, which is just south ofBrown County. The family left Walnut Grove, Minnesota in 1879, andmoved to De Smet, where her father worked on the railroad andhomesteaded . The television series is based on their life inMinnesota. One of her stories talks of De Smet and the "Hard Winterof 1881" when snow reached the second stories of the buildings, andthey were snowed in all winter without food or fuel. (This was thewinter before the Amsden family homesteaded in SD). Eleanor Aven,Amsdens of Groton, (Out of print), p. 178.
