[141] Jerusha Brown Amsden, Uriah's niece comments thusly on Uriah: " Hisfigure was not so good as that of his brothers, but his face showedgreat intelligence and shrewdness. Children were attracted to him.Even in old age, infirm and an invalid when he took his dailyconstitution , children would gather around him and follow him to hisdoor chatting in a most friendly and enjoyable manner. I remember asa child I learned to love him, and when I looked into his face I sawunmistakable benevolence and godliness of heart written in legiblecharacter there". Murray M. The following is an account of Victoria and James MacFarlane's weddingtaken from the Scanton Sunday Times November 1873:
On Thursday last at the close of the union Thanksgiving services atthe Washington Avenue Presbyterian Church, the audience would not bedismissed, not withstanding the pronouncing of the benediction and thepositive statement from the pulpit that the service was over. Itseemed to be pretty well understood that a wedding was about to takeplace there and as it was a day when it didn't matter whether theturkey was put upon the the table at any set hour or not, there was adisposition to stay and see the wedding ceremony. The church wasfilled, every pew groaning beneath a full compliment of sitters. Thedecorations from the memorial services still graced with emblems andfestoons the chancel and columns, and added a beauty that wasappropriate to the occasion, and as some remarked the dates were notfar out of the way. At the appointed time, half past twelve thebridal procession entered the right aisle of the church. Thisconsisted of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Amsden, Fred J. Amsden, Miss EdithLadd of Westchester, formerly of Scranton, Charles J. Amsden, and themother of the bride, and the bride and groom. During the entrance ofthe bridal party, the organist of the church, Miss Stella Seymour, executed with her usual excellent taste and touch, a march of which wedid not learn the name. After the positions were taken, Rev. W.P.Hellings, of the Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church, made theintroductory remarks and invocation, when the Rev. S.C. Logan, D.D.pronounced the impressive word that made of the twain one flesh, theorgan meanwhile discoursed in a soft symphony from "Semiramide", thatseemed to come from some far off region reminding us of the storiedorgan tone from the distant cloister of some monastic pile. Theceremony was brief, the conventional manipulations of hands and ringswere enacted without a miss, and the responses were made with aconfidence and audibility that left no doubt as to the intentions ofthe contracting parties.
The bride looked beautiful, as she always does, not by reason of anyextra adornment, for she was married in travelling costume, butbecause she couldn't help it. Said costume consisted of a dress ofdark blue serge, trimmed with light blue. Three seconds sight of thesame did not admit of sufficient examination to give the style andminutiae of make up but ' twas just as it should be. The party leftthe church , the organ pealing that grand march from the closingoverture of William Tell. The bridal dinner was partaken of at theLackswanna Valley House, and the wedded ones took the train at 3:30 pmfor Philadelphia, whence they will go to New York and thence toWoodstock, Canada, Mr. MacFarlane's home. We didn't like to see thiswedding, because we were opposed to Miss Amsden's leaving town, butthis match couldn't be broken off. However, such things must beborne, so all we hope is that Miss Amsden will find as many friends inher new home as she left behind in her old one. Scranton has lost acharming girl and Woodstock has gained a beautiful wife.
The names of the young gentlemen who acted as ushers and whose care, attention and politeness in seating the multitude was remarked severaltimes in our hearing were Mr. Charles E. Chittenden, S.A. Lackey,James P. Dickson, and Silas Leach.
Referring to the recent references to Mr. MacFarlane by the Woodstockpapers, the Scranton Republican says: we are glad to note the factthat Miss Amsden has found her lot cast with one whom we can putimplicit confidence in. While here, he won many friends by hisgentlemanly deportment and urbanity, which prepossessed all who methim very much in his favor. He is not an old resident of Woodstock,it seems, but has spent most of his life in Montreal, where his familystill resides, and whence come many favorable reports of him.
____________
Mrs. Victoria M. Johnson of New York, Victoria and James MacFarlane'sdaughter , writes Murray Brown that her mother was left handed, andthat as a girl she thought this quite a distinction and was very proudof it. She writes further that her Uncle Fred told her of the twoAmsden brothers who were crossing the country in a caravan which wasattacked by the Indians. The brothers were bound preparatory to beingburned at the stake the following day. During the night the lefthanded brother managed to free them both owing to the fact that hisleft hand had been unbound and they made their escape. Thispeculiarity of left-handedness ran back through generations.
Writing of her mother further, she says, "she was very beautiful, andwas in fact called the most beautiful girl in Scranton, with herdelicate features, pink and white complexion, blue eyes, and heavybrown hair that reached to her knees. She had a lovely high sopranovoice and sang in the choir at Woodstock, Canada where she came withher mother to spend the summer months. It was in Woodstock that shemet my father, who was a young man just starting in business there."
This is where Charles Joseph Amsden died when on a visit to hissister's at Woodstock on Sept. 20, 1876.
Victoria Anstta Amsden MacFarlane died May 11, 1882 in San Gabriel,CA. Her body was brought back to Scranton for burial on the 24th ofthe same month. Her mother Anna T. Amsden was in California and caredfor her daughter, and it was this overstrain which caused her ownbreakdown. Mr. MacFarlane married a second time about five yearsafter the first had passed on.
