Charles was a noted archeologist in Indian artifacts, and Curator ofthe Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, CA. One of his books,"Prehistoric Southwesterners from Basketmaker to Pueblo", has anintroduction written by Dr. A.V. Kidder, well known archeologist fromHarvard University. This introduction gives much information on theboyhood and family background of Charles. His most well known book isentitled "Navajo Weaving". He died at 41 years of age. Ancestorsand Descendants of Jonathan Nichols Amsden & Amelia Jane Smith1636-1977.Warnick, Bernice Amsden, (Santa Maria, CA. 1978.).
Charles Amsden's book "Navajo Weaving", was found among Marie Amsden'saffects, at the time of her death in 1988, by her sister Alice AmsdenRoth. There are other hints that Marie knew of the connection betweenthe families, but she apparently did not pass this information alongto her family. Marie gave an interview in 1985 to the Groton, SouthDakota Historical Society, indicating she knew the family history. Theinformation was mostly erroneous, but there were some truths to berevealed. Her poor health, and memory loss no doubt contributed tothe false information. Marie loved secrets and kept her own lifeveiled in mystery. (notes - Lynn Roth, 1997).
