In an email from Plank, Apr 5, 2002, we have the following -
A Uriah Amsden, age 26 and born in New York, was living in HendricksTownship, Shelby County, IN in the 1850 census. I am assuming thatthis is Calvin's oldest son, since the rest of the family turned up inShelby County. (With the exception of Pudence Pauline, and I've foundno trace of
her.)

Brown gives death as between 1790 and 1796 and gives birth as the 10thand the 19th. Dates used here from the DAR Index Centennial EditionPart 1 p.57. Warnick gives death as 1793 and quotes her source asVital Records of NH. The family moved from Marlborough to Bolton, Ma.after the births of their first three children. Two more childrenwere born while residing in Bolton. The date is unknown when theymigrated from Massachusetts to a tract of wilderness known as #6 inthe territory of New Hampshire. Records show that Uriah and Abigaildeeded their land in Bolton to John Moore, Oct. 8, 1765. Most likelythey moved to Henniker, Vt. shortly there after, where they appear asresidents in 1774.
This grant was made by the English king to certain persons on July 16,1752. It was named in honor of John Henniker of London. Lots weredrawn and the town was reputed to have been settled by men fromMarlborough. One requirement of the settlement was that within threeyears the members of the community had to build and finish aconvenient meeting house for public worship of God and to settle anordained minister.
The inhabitants voted in 1770 to build a meeting house 30X20 feet. Oneyear had elapsed after the church was organized, twenty dollars wasallowed from communal funds. The walls were built of logs, and whilestill roofless, the people gathered there to worship. Even after theroof was put on , it was used for a period of ten years with no glassin the window frames and no heat. Worshipers brought foot stoves.During the Revolutionary War the church was burned , supposedly it wasan incendiary act. A lack of harmony became apparent within themembership, followed by a growing difference in religious beliefs.
The DAR Patriot Index cites Uriah as a patriotic citizen. Uriah's nameappears as one of the signers of the "Association Test", a pledge ofloyalty circulated by the Committee of Safety, prior to theDeclaration of Independence. The signers of the test make declarationthat "we will to the upmost of our power, at the risque of our livesand fortunes, oppose the hostile proceedings of the British Armiesagainst the United American Colonies". Prior to this Uriah had servedin some of the Indian wars. A powder horn engraved with datesrepresenting Indian and white camps had been in the family untilstolen shortly before the 1930's. If the Colonies had lost the war,his signature would surely have sealed his fate as a traitor.Massachusetts Military records show that four sons of Uriah andAbigail fought in the Revolutionary War. DAR Patriot Index -Centennial Edition, Part 1, pg. 57.
Uriah and his son Joseph were millers by trade, and according to Brownthey were said to be "very busy men, and highly respectable , but donot appear upon the records much, probably because they minded theirown business".
Uriah and son Joseph, founded the first settlement at West Henniker. Here they built a saw mill in 1778 and at the close of theRevolutionary War they added a grist mill. It was the first in thetownship and patronized by the people in adjoining towns. These millswere afterwards owned by the Woods brothers and were in successfuloperation for nearly three-quarters of a century. The last owner wasAmmi Smith of Hillsboro, N.H.
The first mill for dressing cloth was built by Uriah and Josephshortly after the grist mill was erected. It was shortly thereaftersold to Timothy Sprague. Warnick, Bernice Amsden, Ancestors andDescendants of Jonathan Nichols Amsden & Amelia Jane Smith 1636-1977,(Santa Maria, CA. 1978.).
Simms gives birth as Jun 19 1725. Copeland gives it as Jul 19 1725,Henniker, NH and gives his death as Mar 16 1786. Copeland also statesthat Uriah was married 3 times and assigns his children and theirmothers as follows:
Abigail Lull - Joseph b 1749 and Noah b 1758 and Lovisa (no dates). Both Benjamin and Joel are in this chart but with no dates.
Mary Edward - Benjamin b 1751
Hannah Morse - Joel b 1755
It seems unlikely that Noah b 1758 would be the son of Abigail ifCopeland's listings are correct otherwise.
