[211] Noah was probably the first of the family to migrate from New York toIllinois. Town records of Belvidere, Boone Co., Illinois, show themliving there in 1845. From Belvidere, Noah moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where he had a store and spent most of the remainder of his life. Noahand Sarah had three other children not listed, who died. There is aletter written on Noah's business stationary that still exists. Theletter head says, "B.C. Amsden & Son, jobbers of HATS, CAPS, AND STRAWGOODS, also Dealers in Buck Gloves , 380 Main Street, Dubuque,Iowa". In this letter he tries to collect a long overdue accountowing to his father, Jonathan, from an earlier time. He writes withaffection and laments that Jonathan has taken his family and gone sofar away from all the family and other friends. This was addressed toJonathan in Jamestown, Colorado, May 30, 1875. One record gives his birth as Jan. 19, 1758. Noah served in theRevolutionary War, and fought in the battles of Monmouth and Trenton, and was wounded in the New Jersey Campaign. Discharged April 1780.Pension # 5275, NY. DAR Patriot Index, 1966 p. 13. Secretary of theCommonwealth, Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the RevolutionaryWar, (Wright & Potter Pring Co., State Printers, Boston, MA. 1896),p. 228.
After his discharge he married Prudence Cummings of Ware,Massachusetts. They resided in Henneker, New Hampshire.
Around 1800 the family moved to Vermont. Just when they joined themigratory trek into western New York state where lands were beingopened up to soldiers of the Revolution is not known. Historydescribes these journeys as migratory families seeking land. Theyusually followed the paths of rivers, sometimes having to chop theirway through groves of trees, and the trip took many weeks. Thesettlement where Noah brought his large family was called Livonia, then called Ontario County. It was later portioned off to LivingstonCounty, and is not far from Rochester.
Noah received a war pension in 1818. He was listed as 62 years oldand in poor health. He was a farmer and two children ages 14 and 16still lived in the home. His pension amounted to $8.00 a month.Warnick, Bernice Amsden, Ancestors and Descendants of Jonathan NicholsAmsden & Amelia Jane Smith 1636-1977, (Santa Maria, CA. 1978.).
