The following is a letter written by Janette to Mr. W.U. Amsden inresponse to family genealogy questions.
Warsaw, N.Y.
Oct. 6, 1883
Dear Sir,
Your letter of July 14th, which you wrote to my brother BeamanAmsden, formerly of Fremont, Ohio, but now of Bingham, WyomingTerritory, was remailed to East Gainesville, Wyoming County, New York,my place of residence, but I was not at home and it only reached meabout three days ago. I am not at home and shall not be able to giveyou as much information respecting our family as I could if I werehome. I have a letter from a cousin of my father's giving a historyof the family from the time three brothers came over from England, twoof them settled in Deerfield, Mass. And the third one they never knewwhere he located. Their names I can't remember without consulting theletter. I can give you the history of my ancestors as far back as mygreat-grandfather, by name Isaac Amsden, he married for his first wifeSarah Belden, by whom he had four children, Isaac my Grandfather,Sarah, Simeon, and Eunice. His wife died, and he married HannahCatlin by whom he had three children: Consider, Submit, and Ira. Mygrandfather married for his first wife Elizabeth Gates by whom he hadthirteen children: Oliver, Anna, Sarah, William, Hannah, Ellihue, (myfather), Polly, Abner, Thomas, Experience, Philena, Lucinda, andElizabeth. His wife died and he married a second wife, a widow namedDiadema Lockwood by whom he had three children: Clarissa, William andJane. His second wife died and quite late in life he married thethird time a widow Kelley. I am unable to give you any dates in thisletter for I haven't them with me. Oliver Amsden died while a youngman. Anna married a man by the name of Ammi Whitney, she had a familyof fifteen children I think. I will give you their names in a futureletter if you desire it. Sarah died in infancy. William was killed bythe fall of a tree at the age of twenty-one. Hannah married a man bythe name of George Brockway, she died leaving a family of threechildren, and he afterwards married her sister Polly, by whom he hadsix children. Ellihue, my father, married Sarah Bishop. They had sixchildren, five of whom are living. Beaman is the oldest and does notbear a family name, my mother named him after a Beaman Brockway.Janette, my own name, Isaac after our grandfather, Edwin and Ellen M.
My father was a very successful surgeon and physician following hisprofession over fifty years, always living in the same place. He diedin 1870 at the age of seventy-nine, retaining his faculties unimpairedto the last. Abner married Nellie Post, he died young leaving adaughter, his wife died soon after, and his daughter died at the ageof nineteen. Thomas married Lydia Chapman, they having a family ofseven children, only three of them living. His wife died and hemarried Harriet Williams, by whom he had five children. Experiencemarried Reuben Pratt. I think she had six children. I never saw anyof that family except a daughter. Philena married Loren Moore. Theyhad eight children. Lucinda married Daniel Carpenter, they had tenchildren. Elizabeth the youngest, married Thomas Hutchinson. She diedquite young leaving a family of six. Clarissa the oldest of thesecond family married William Goodale and they had four daughters. Theoldest daughter moved to California , and in trying to save her childfrom falling into a well, they both fell and were drowned. Williammarried Eliza Fero and they had five children. Jane married aEnglishman Henry Bramwell, they had one son.
Now I will go back to my grandfather's brothers and sisters . Sarahthe oldest married a man by the name of Foyd. Simeon married AbigailWhitney, an older sister of Ammi Whitney, who married my father'solder sister. Eunice married Edward Forbes. He was a clerk on boardthe vessel Bonnie Homme Richard, under Commodore John Paul Jones. Idon't know whom Consider Amsden married. Submit married a man by thename of Spinning and Ira a Miss Minerva Bond.
My grandfather moved into the state of New York, Ontario County, whenmy father was three years old, and in 1867 he went back to theone-hundredth anniversary of the incorporation of his native townConway. He visited the old Amsden homestead where Ira , the last ofthe name of Amsden who lived and died there, and his widow Minerva wasstill living there with her youngest daughter. There are two or threeAmsden families living in Rochester, and I have heard of one living inAnomosa, Iowa, a clergyman, but don't know his given name.
I would like to know if anything I have written corresponds with thehistory of any branch of the family you have. My father met anAmsden in Buffalo a long time ago, he lived in Canada but came fromEngland. He gave father his card, with all their names and places ofresidence. I kept the card a number of years, but it is finally lostand I have forgotten nearly everything about them. I think one of thebrother's names was John, and one of the sisters was Rebecca, buttheir husband's names I have forgotten. I never heard of the Amsdensyou wrote about before.
I will not trouble you with a longer letter this time, for my businessis such that I can not apply myself as I ought in writing a letter ofthis kind. Nursing the sick is my business and I have to lay aside mywriting every few minutes. I shall be very glad to furnish you withall the information I possess in regard to the Amsden family and wouldlike to hear the same from you.
Respectfully yours,
Janette Amsden
Brown, Murray, Some Descendents of Isaac Amsden of CambridgeMassachusetts, (1934).
Janette also mentions the story of three brothers coming to thiscountry. The story is however in error, for the early Amsdens did notsettle in Marlborough, but remained in Cambridge then moved on toSudbury.
