From the journal left by his mother, it seems evident that religiousbelief played an important part within the Nichols family. Letterswritten years later by many of his brothers and sisters show thatfrom early childhood they had continued to be devout Christians.Jonathan's older brother Benjamin Monroe Amsden, was a Congregationalminister. A record of the First Presbyterian Church at Westfield,NY., 1817 shows that Jonathan's mother and her brother and sisters ascharter members. In addition to their religious background, there isevidence that as a family, they were intent on acquiring an education.Achsah, Jonathan's mother, taught school prior to 1817, and three ofhis sisters became teachers. In Belvidere, Illinois.
In Belvidere, Illinois, Jonathan met and courted Amelia Jane Smith.Family letters from
the later decades of the 1800's which have been preserved, show thatJonathan's parents and sisters remained in Illinois, so that theycontinued to see one another through the years. Jonathan and hisbride settled for a brief time in Lafayette, Iowa, and Otto was bornthere in 1856. The Federal Census of 1860, Missouri, p. 12, findsthem in Cuba, Crawford County Missouri, sharing the household ofBarnabus Smith, Jonathan's father in-law.
Missouri was the scene of numerous border skirmishes between theConfederate and Union forces during the years of the conflict. Therewas a Union fort and supply depot at Rolla, Missouri, 20 miles to thewest of Cuba. Cuba was on a direct rail line from St. Louis to thefort. In efforts to disrupt the shipment of supplies to the enemy,Confederate raiders devastated the town, setting fires and breakingties loose from the rails to prevent supplies getting through toRolla.
The war years brought added sadness to Jonathan and Amelia. They feltthe loss of two small sons, Edwin and Clarence about 1864. Clarencewas called "Little Tot". Almost simultaneously with the assassinationof President Lincoln, April 1865, another son was born. Carey wasfollowed by Fannie, and their last child Frank Sidney was born in1871.
The family moved to Rolla, Missouri shortly after the 1870 FederalCensus. Jonathan and Amelia's son, Otto Amsden, 15 years old, wasenrolled in the first class of the Missouri School of Mines, whichopened that year in Rolla. Otto attended school there until shortlybefore his graduation. Four months before he was to graduate, he justdropped out of school. Evidently the decision was a sudden one. Hehad been signed up to take the entrance exam to the U.S. Naval Academyat Annapolis. The decision for the family to abruptly move on toColorado and its mining fields, was most likely due to financialproblems. Barnabus Smith, Amelia's father was already prospecting inthe mining district of Boulder as early as 1871.
As the story goes, Jonathan and his two older sons, Otto and Carey age9, started out from Missouri with a wagon and a team of horses. Duringtheir journey, somewhere in Kansas, they lost one of the horses.Replacement became a problem because of their very limited funds.Somehow they managed to acquire another horse, but they faced a longjourney ahead across desolate regions of eastern Colorado. Theyfinally reached the village of Jamestown , among the mountain canyons, north and west of Boulder.
No date is given for this journey, but Amelia with her two smallchildren, boarded the train and made the long tedious journey acrossthe plains to their anticipated new home in the Colorado Rockies.Lettie and Allie were born here, and so concluded the child bearingyears of Amelia, that spanned more than 20 years.
A history of the mining activity around Jamestown indicates that theboom did not last. There were many lean years. The Amsdens remainedthere until 1888 when they acquired some farm land in Weld County, near Ft. Lupton, Colorado.
Jonathan served on the local school board, and they remained less thanfour years in Ft. Lupton. They were arduous years, full of struggle.Jonathan died during this time and is buried in the old section of thelocal cemetery. There is no marker on his grave.
Amelia gave up the farm and with her widowed mother moved to Denver toexpose her children to better educational opportunities. Ancestorsand Descendants of Jonathan Nichols Amsden & Amelia Jane Smith1636-1977.Warnick, Bernice Amsden, (Santa Maria, CA. 1978.).

Jonathan spent his very early years in the South Dakota mining townsof the Black Hills. They moved to Colorado Springs during the boom atCripple Creek and Victor. When Sarah, his mother died he was 13 yearsold, and from that time on he accompanied his father living in miningcamps.
After marrying Amy he was a forest ranger, and worked for the U.S.Forest Service. They eventually moved to Pioche to be with Jonathan'sfamily, and he worked as a engineer for Pioche Mines. He also builtand installed the first sound movies in the town theater and wasinterested in amateur radio.
While living in Pioche, Jonathan built a small airplane using castoroil for the fuel needed to fly it. He was rather an ingenious fellow.Warnick, Bernice Amsden, Ancestors and Descendants of Jonathan NicholsAmsden & Amelia Jane Smith 1636-1977, (Santa Maria, CA. 1978.).
