From "History of Chautauqua County" by Young. p. 572 - Mr. BenjaminAmsden is listed as one of the early ministers of the Congregationaland Presbyterian Church, at Stockton, New York. In 1857 he performedthe wedding ceremony when Lavenia Amsden married George Murch atBelvidere, Illinois.
Records show he purchased considerable acreage near Manchester, Iowa, and this is where he and Reliance raised their family of eightchildren.
Two letters written by Benjamin, one to his brother Jonathan, NewYears Day 1891, and another about 10 years later to Jonathan'sdaughter, Alice Amsden, give considerable information about hisfamily. The warm and friendly nature of Benjamin comes through in hiswriting. The letter to his daughter was written 6 months before hisown death, and in it he makes reference to the death of his sonCharles Finney Amsden. He goes on to talk of his other children andof the work of each and of their families. Apparently it had become acustom of Benjamin to write every New Year's Day to each of hisbrothers and sisters.
The date of the second letter is 1900. Evidently it was written inreply to one he had received from his niece Allie Amsden. Benjamin'sletter of several pages, to a girl he had never seen, tells much abouthimself. He writes of a visit to Massachusetts to attended a 50 yearreunion of his college class, and that he was able to spend timevisiting with his daughter, Carrie and her husband William Stanger, and their daughter Margaret.
The letter also refers to Benjamin's other son Avery Monroe Amsden, who had just moved from Iowa to Farmington, New Mexico, for reasons ofhealth and to raise sheep. Avery's son is the renowned archeologiston Indian artifacts Charles Avery Amsden. " Bernice is the writer and compiler of "Ancestors and Descendants ofJonathan Nichols Amsden and Amelia Jane Smith 1636-1977". When I cameacross Bernice's family history at the nearby Family History Center Iwas overjoyed, excited and soon spellbound. She is descended from theIsaac Branch, yet her ancestors travelled , settled and crossed pathswith the John Branch for 150 years, leaving little indication theyknew or socialized with each other. Both families migrated toWestern New York, Ontario County area, from Massacrers, and thenmoved westward to Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa living only a fewmiles apart across state lines. Some of John's Line moved on toSouth Dakota in the 1880's and it is noted in the book "The Amsden'sof Groton" , that another Amsden family lived close by and appearedin the school year book, but were not related. Unless they were fromthe Canadian Amsden immigrants, I can assure you they were related.During this time frame I found a land deed for "Zadie" Amsden in BrownCounty, South Dakota. It was situated close to Arthur TibbetsAmsden's homestead, yet the name "Saddie" does not appear in the JohnBranch anywhere. Could "Zaddie" be a misprint for "Sadie", andperhaps be Sarah Saul Amsden, wife to Otto Benjamin Amsden? She was anative of South Dakota, yet any recorded information concerning her, centers in the Black Hills area.
Bernice's branch were miners, rock hounds and engineers. This isalso true of John's Branch down through Lyman William Amsden to hisgreat grandson Barry Roth, who also attended Colorado School of Mines, and is today an engineer in the San Francisco Bay area. It appearsboth branches have retained the genes of mechanical, inventive, ingenuity abilities with a desire for adventure.
Bernice taught school, much of her career in Santa Maria, California. She and Paul moved there with the development of the Missile and Spaceprogram to which he was transferred, at Vandenberg AF Base in centralcoastal California. She retired in 1969." Lynn Roth.
