The following is a reprint of Fred J's. obituary taken from theScranton Pennsylvania Tribune, Wednesday June 6, 1906:
Death claimed Captain Fred J. Amsden shortly after 7 o'clock yesterdaymorning at his home, 716 Olive Street, after an illness covering aperiod of over five years. It was not until about two weeks agohowever that his condition became alarming and since then everythingpossible was done to stay the death summons, but it was to no avail, and he succumbed to an affliction of the heart. His wife and niece,Miss Edith Amsden of Philadelphia were at his bedside.
Mr. Amsden was in his Sixty- fifth year. During the half century hespent in this city, he always maintained a leading position as anarchitect, and, as such, designed many of the leading buildings in thecity. His office was located in the Amsden building, at the coronerof Washington Avenue and Lackawanna Avenue for many years. Five yearsago he suffered a stroke of paralysis, but recovered sufficiently toresume his profession, until a short time ago, when he was forced togive up and take to his bed. He again recovered sufficient strengthto leave his room for a short time, but the valvular affection of theheart he was suffering from soon rendered him almost helpless, and helingered in this condition until he died. The funeral services willbe held at the house Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and will be incharge of the Grand Army men and the Masonic Fraternity. Internmentwill be made in the Dunmore Cemetery.
Captain Amsden accompanied his parents to Boston, MA, Easton, PA, andfinally in April 1851 to Scranton, where he received his earlyeducation in private schools. Later he was a student in Prof. R.E.Rice's academy at Stamford, CT. He fitted himself for his professionof civil engineer and architecture in the office of his father.
On August 26, 1862 he was commissioned second lieutenant of the OneHundred and Thirty-Six-Pennsylvania Infantry, and was promoted tofirst lieutenant on April 1, 1863, and mustered out on May 29, of thesame year, having passed through the battles of Fredericksburg andChancellorville.
He was commissioned second lieutenant of the signal corps, U.S. Armyon October 3, 1863, to rank of brevet first lieutenant U.S. Volunteerson March 13, 1865, for "gallantly maintaining his position under greatexposure, on James River Signal Tower, while his station was for sometime deliberately cannonaded by the rebel batteries.
On March 13, 1865 he was brevet Captain of United States Volunteersfor gallant and meritorious services during the war. He saw servicealong the Atlantic coast in the department of the South, and in theTenth, Eighteenth, Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth Army Corps, inVirginia at Port Waltha, Swift Creek, Drewry's Bluff, Bermuda Hundred,Cold Harbor, Weir Bottom Church siege of Petersburg, Mine Explosion,Chapins Farm, Fair Oaks, Port Gregg and Fall of Petersburg, Farmville,Rice's Station, and Appomattox C.H., being the chief signal officer,Twenty-fourth Army Corps.
He was present at the surrender of Lee and finally in the Powder RiverExpedition against the Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians in Montanain the fall of 1865. December 8th of that year he was mustered out atFort Leavenworth, Kansas. In April 1866, Captain Amsden took chargeof the drafting office of the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Railroadmachine and car shops, but resigned in April 1868 to accept a positionin the office of his father whose death occurred in December of thesame year.
Since that time he carried on the business of civil engineering (beingcity surveyor from 1869 to 1876), and architecture devoting himselfhowever, since 1876, entirely to architecture. Many of the best andfinest buildings in the Lackawanna and Wyoming valleys bear testimonyto his skill in his profession.
Fraternally, Captain Amsden was past master of Union Lodge, No. 291,Free and accepted Masons, past district deputy grand master ofPennsylvania; past high priest of Lackawanna chapter No. 185 RoyalArch Masons; past eminent commander of Coeur de Leon commoner, No. 17,Knights Templars; past commander of Lieut. Ezra S. Griffin post, No.139, Grand Army of the Republic; past junior commander of thedepartment of Pennsylvania, and has been honored by the departmentcommander at various times, by staff appointments and by thecommander-in-chief as an aide-de-camp on the national staff.
He has drawn the plans for many Catholic churches in this diocese, andthe first Catholic Church of any size, St Peters Cathedral inCarbondale, was designed by his father.
In 1894, in this city he married Miss L. May Davies, who was born inCarbondale, and is a member of an old family in the county. They hadno children.
