Notes from Roth - Lyman's military pension records from the War of1812 state he was a resident of Ontario Co., Seneca, NY. He wasdrafted on Dec. 15, 1812 and discharged at Williamsville, NY Mar. 13,1813. He served again 99 days under Captain Woodworth and ColonelDobbins and was discharged April 1, 1814.
He and Cynthia Tibbets married 1816 in NY, Ontario Co. I believe allof Cynthia and Lyman's children were born in NY with the exception ofJoel. The tax list for Sandusky, OH 1826, York Town, has Lyman on itstax rolls. He also owned land in Delaware and Seneca Counties in 1824and 1826 according to Ohio Land Records. His land in Seneca Co.adjoined his cousin's Thomas Amsden, and Thomas's brother in-law FredChapman. The town of Amsden, OH is located nearby.
After Cynthia passed away in 1830, he married Mary Whitman in Seneca,OH, 1833. It is believed that he and Mary's first three daughterswere born in Seneca, OH, however the Courthouse burned to the groundand all records lost. Local school records still exist through theHistorical Society however, perhaps even revealing Lyman and Cynthia'sfirst female child's name. Mary Whitman Amsden petitioned forLyman's war pension in later years. One of the documents mentionsshe has a daughter Minnie, living in Seneca, OH. None of Mary'sgirls went by the name of Minnie, so perhaps this daughter is inreality her step-daughter, and the missing first born child of Lymanand Cynthia.
By 1839 Lyman and Mary had moved on to Winnebago, IL, where theypurchased acreage according to Illinois land records. After a fewyears there, they moved up to Mifflin, WI where Josephine was born, and Lyman William and Parkhurst were mining. Once again it was not alengthy stay, and they moved on to IA.
Lyman was given the opportunity for 160 acres of bounty land nearOsage, IA. The patent was apparently not claimed by Dec. 23, 1859.He and Mary eventually settled in Clayton County where they remaineduntil their deaths.
Affidavits verifying his military experience were verified by MartinGarber May 1, 1871, and Mary received his military pension #9136 of$8.00 per month.
