William Oscar Amsden had wanderlust as a young man. He left southwestWisconsin, or the homestead in Groton, South Dakota around 1880 andheaded for the Klondike in Alaska to ply his profession ofphotography. There is a passage in The Amsden's of Groton, that statesthat the Amsden boys had a photography studio in town. We are left toguess if this included William Oscar, or was it his nephews that hehad taught photography, that were carrying on the craft. The Amsden'sof Groton also mentions that William Oscar, who the family calledWill, returned to the homestead for a visit before heading off toSouth Africa to cover the Boer War as a photo journalist in 1900.
From Johannesburg Will headed toward France to photograph the ParisExpedition. He was 38 years old. William boarded in the home ofMadame Mertens during his visit to Paris.. He soon became interestedin Madame Mertens's 17 year old daughter Gabrielle. It's been saidshe had long dark hair cascading down her back and was scrubbingfloors when he first laid eyes upon her. He called her his littlegypsy. He left Paris to travel to London to photograph thecoronation. Mother Mertens wanted to break up this budding romancehowever , and she sent Gabrielle to Belgium and promptly interceptedall letters from William. Somehow William returned , found Gabrielle, and they were married. After several attempts to open a photographystudio in Europe, he brought Gabrielle to New York City.
Gabrielle gave birth to Marie and Mabel while in New York and waspregnant with Alice, when the family moved to Los Angeles, California.William had cousins in the movie business, so he obtained a job with amovie studio doing still shots for the Hoffman Brothers of earlycowboy fame.
Gabrielle was thought not to be happy in California, and muchpreferred the metropolitan atmosphere of New York City. Shortly afterAlice's birth the family returned to New York, where Williamestablished a studio.
At this time it is not known if William Oscar ever returned to SouthDakota. He did make a bus trip to Idaho Falls in 1936 where hevisited with some family. The letter he wrote to Alice, his daughter,is included in the following pages.
William Oscar spent his last days living with his daughter AliceAmsden Roth in Mt. Kisco, New York. It is thought he suffered fromAlzheimer's. Gabrielle became a nurse and worked full time in NewYork City, and could not care for him. Gabrielle retired to Florida, and died in 1964.
Another letter included in the following pages is a love letterwritten to Gabrielle in 1902 while Will was in London and she inBelgium.

[246] William was by occupation a treasurer and book-keeper. He deservesmore than a little credit for the appearance of the "AmsdenGenealogy", for due to his careful and persistant work many missinglinks were slowly and painstakingly uncovered, and having been donefifty years before this work has made an appearance much has beenpreserved to posterity that might have remained forever lost. In manylines he had the work brought up to 1885 fairly completely. Hisdaughter Mrs. Florence Belle (Amsden) Wilcox very kindly informed meof these records which were in the possession of Mrs. John B. Scott,Fredericksburg, Va. daughter of Annie Mabel (Amsden) Williams, seep.66. Needless to say they have been of great value in the compilationof the Amsden genealogy. Murray M.
