Beaman was named after a Beaman Brockway and did not bear the familyresemblance, according to his sister Janette. He lived for a while inFreemont, OH. Beaman was a surveyor, as noted in a letter from hiswife. He married twice and with his first wife had two daughters. Hissecond marriage brought six children , one of them a Lieutenant in theU.S. Navy who died in 1887. Murray M. Brown, Descendents of IsaacAmsden of Cambridge Massachusetts, (1934).
The following letter was written by Beaman's second wife in responseto an inquiry by Mr. W.U. Amsden, who was doing genealogical research.Unfortunately she signed the letter Mrs. B. Amsden, so we are at aloss as to her given name.
Dayton, Johnson County, N.W. Terr.
Sept. 15, 1883
Dear Sir,
My husband Beaman Amsden received your letter of July 19th, andwe read it with a great deal of interest. He intended to answer it atonce, but being afflicted with hay fever, eyes inflamed, and feelingbad every way he deferred it, and was off surveying as soon as wellenough. We have talked it over and I will tell you all we know of thesubject.
His grandfather's name was Isaac. He was an old man of eighty asBeaman remembered him. He died with his son William; he had two sonswith that name , one died early in life. He had seven girls and fivesons that I can count names Ellihue, Thomas Gates, William Abner, andgirls Polly, Anna, Experience, Philena, Clarissa and Jane. One of hiswives names was Gates. Father Amsden was Ellihue. He was a doctorand quite a celebrated surgeon, lived and died in East Gainsville,N.Y. He named his third son Isaac. His daughter Janette is a veryintelligent woman of sixty, and she could tell you more about thefamily past and present than anyone that I know of. She is very muchinterested in all such researches. She would know who had hergrandfather's Bible, and much more about him, being always at home ,than Beaman would. She went about twenty years ago down to theSouthern part of Connecticut by invitation of either the Amsdens orGates to attend a reunion of the family connections. They were verypleasantly entertained I know. Isaac Amsden of Fremont is a son ofthe late Thomas A. Amsden of Bellevue, who was a merchant there formany years.
There is a strong resemblance running through all the branches of thefamily, large men, rather long noses, and small mouths, dark eyes, square jaws, rather high heads, etc., and most of the girls are blackeyed and red cheeks and are most all good looking.
I will send your letter to Janette at East Gainsville and I think shewill answer it soon. I am sorry that I did not attend to it sooner.Beaman is sixty-seven, me too; next he has two daughters by his firstwife. They incline to marry, none remain widowers long. Mrs. EllenBall of Dakota, Mrs. Sarah Gage of Bolivia, N.Y.
I have six children by him, one son is a Lieut. In the Navy. His nameis Charles Heath Amsden. My children have all good memories and aregood moral men and woman. I never knew one of the name who didanything criminal. That is to the credit of the name certain. I knowby experience that some of them failed in business and had to gobroke.
I am sorry to make such a meager report and would gladly forward yourresearches. If there is ever a book published my son Beaman wants oneor more.
Very Respectfully Yours,
Mrs. B. Amsden
