Samuel and his wife Abigail, left Stowe, VT in two covered wagons withtheir three children in 1828. They were followed by a one horsewagon in which rode Samuel's parents, Abraham and Submit Amsden. Afterthirty days of travel they arrived in Ashtabula, OH. Samuel being abrickmaker by trade, immediately began looking for a suitable bed ofclay for brick making, and found what he wanted on the South RidgeRoad, two miles east of Ashtabula, upon which was a log cabin and asmall clearing. The house being small he immediately built a housefor his father and mother out of three inch whitewood plank, twelveinches wide, setting them up edgewise, locking and pinning them withwood pins. This was covered with boards placed vertically withbattens covering the cracks. Samuel was a farmer, brickmaker,blacksmith, shoemaker, and carpenter. He made his own horseshoes andnails to fasten them with. He made the boots and shoes for hisfamily. He managed to clear the land by hiring one or two men,cutting the timber into wood - it took forty cords of four foot woodto burn 1000,000 brick , besides the wood for the two houses, and putup a kiln of one hundred thousand brick every season which met withready sale.
