Lynn Roth contributed the following letter from Elvira Hildreth Piperto her father, Clark.
Canton, Ohio January 29, 1846
Dear Father,
I sat down this evening to write a few lines to you. I received yourletter last week Tuesday and we are all well. Now I think you hadbetter come out here as soon as you can, for you would enjoy yourselfvery well and see the country. I think you had better come by way ofthe river. From Massachusetts go to New York, from there toPhiladelphia and then to Pittsburgh, and then down the Ohio Riveraround to St. Louis and then come up the Illinois River to CopperCreek and there you will find teams which are coming to Cantoneveryday which is ten miles from us to Copper Creek. I think you hadbetter come this way. Let your farm for two years, for we shall notlet you go back short of that time. Start as soon as two or threeweeks certain for the children can wait no longer. They have a pipeand tobacco already for you to smoke. Clark says "grandpa don't yougo off the boat for you will get left behind".
Now concerning the things I should like you to bring. I should like25 No.4 palm leaf and 25 No.3, get some good ones. Some Ioushong tea,6 or 8 pounds of it, for it is all green tea here. Now the thingsthat you have that I should like to have you fetch. One of the beds,with some of your bed clothes for you and Clark to sleep on. Take thepudding and sauce dishes and the pitcher that I left and put them inthe bed. If you have any old cheese or dried apple fetch it with youfor it brings 12 cents a pound here. If you have any other things ornotions that you can see around bring them for it will not cost youmuch. I should like you to bring that travelling basket which Mrs.Johnson was so 'fraid that I should have. See where the silver cardis, and bring it if you want to, or anything else , you can carry themback once more. If you see anything of the children's that you thinkthey would like, some of the books and them seats they left, it wouldplease them very much to see them, or anything of mine that I left.Bring everything you can think of. Fetch a box or two of countrymustard, some red eyed beans to plant, some peas etc. If Mr. Pipers(Elvira's father in-law) chest is not sold he wants you to take theinside out and you can put things in that, put a lock on it and bringthat. And you have other boxes that will hold. Put a waybill on yourboxes marked with your name, Clark Hildreth, Canton, Fulton County,Illinois. Nail them on to one end. Wear your old hat and clothes toride in, keep your money out of sight, put your money in your watchpocket and pin it. Don't have more than a dollar about at one time,your pocketbook locked up and keep a good lookout for your things.
Mr. Piper would like to have John come with you if he will. He wantstwo more hands to work with him, perhaps Darius Skinner will come, goand see if he will, Mr. Piper will pay them more than they can get outthere. You can come now as anytime. If you don't come till the lastof May or first of June, come by way of the lakes, but I shall hearfrom you again before that time, and will write where to go. Getsomeone to come with you if you can, for it is a long journey to goalone. Please write me a letter when you shall start, so that I shallknow when to look for you. It will take about three weeks to come ,the same as it did for me. The children all send their love toGrandpa and say do come now for it will make you sick to come on thelakes. Mr. Piper wants that you should fetch his bit and screw andsquare thread which is in the bench in the woodhouse, Samuel will knowit. If you come have your Barre newspapers sent here, for we have apaper from Worcester, Massachusetts every week. Give my love to allinquiring friends if any there is. Get Elisha and Electa to pack yourthings, they will know my dishes and your things what you will want tofetch. Pack them tight as you can. Do not fail of coming father forI think you will enjoy yourself here. I have peach and plum currentsin the garden where I live.

Good Evening Cousin Elisa and how is your health the New Year? Ishould like to have you come and make me a visit this summer ifconvenient, and your mother or any of you. I have not much news towrite. Sarah says Elisa went with her to see Grandma Piper. She says Imust tell you what a New Years present she got, a goose and twochickens already dressed. Little Willie Brown sent them to her, theylive two miles from us. They are after her every little whilem and shegoes up and stays a week at a time. They have three large girls, whomake a dear baby of her. She says she wants to see Elisa and Polly asshe calls her. Edmond is a rogue. He likes his father as well as Sarahever did. Winslow, Louisa and Clark go to school. They enjoythemselves very much and send their love to you all. Aunt Polly, Mary,Samuel Powers, my love to the same. Tell Eunice and Aunt Polly I amjust as ugly as ever. I wish they lived where I could send them somemilk, for I have given away pailfuls this winter. I make all my ownbutter. I am tired of writing. Give my love to Mr. Peckham's family.Tell Mr. Simmons family we are all well and should like to have themwrite to us. My love to Mrs. Thayer and ask her if she has had thebolster pulled away from her lately? The children all send their loveto her children and say, Martha Ann and Mary Ann send them a letterand kiss the baby for them. Winslow, Louisa and Clark send their loveto all the little boys and girls and twll them they are very muchpleased with the papers they have received from them and hope theywill continue to send them.
