The following appeared in a Scranton, PA newspaper:
Frank Fielding Amsden, for the past six years superintendent of theLochiel Furnaces, died at his home, 107 Reily Street, late yesterdayafternoon. Mr. Amsden had been seriously ill but one week. He wassixty years old.
During the World War, Mr. Amsden, considered one of America's foremostauthorities on the operation of steel blast furnaces. introduced themanufacture of manganese at the Lochiel Furnace, the first furnace inthe United States to manufacture manganese. Prior to the war thisprocess was exclusive among the German steel crafters. Steelauthorities from all parts of the world came here to study Mr.Amsden's methods.
Prior to the war , Mr. Amsden, with Miss Elsie Singmaster, ofGettysburg, wrote a technical book on the operation of blast furnaces. For several years this book stood supreme in its class and only thisyear has it been revised to include several new alloys.
Mr. Amsden had been in failing health but a few months, but becamecritically ill last Sunday. Mr. Amsden was a graduate of LehighUniversity in 1887 receiving his Bachelor of Science degree. He tooka post graduate course in mineralogy, graduating in 1889. He leftcollege and became superintendent of a blast furnace in St. Louis. In1895 he married Jessie Keller of Reading, PA.
One year ago Mr. Amsden toured Europe, studying steel conditions andthe operations of various types of furnaces, many of the ideas heincorporated into his work at Lochiel.
Mr. Amsden removed from St. Louis after several years , to come hereto Scranton as superintendent of the Paxton Furnace, and remainedthere for eight years. He left there to manage steel plants inEverett, Chester, Roanoke, VA., Buffalo, and Chicago.
He was the son of Capt. Frank P. Amsden and Harriet Fielding Amsden ofScranton. His father was a civil engineer and built the Delaware,Lackawanna & Western Railroad, and his grandfather planned the city ofScranton. Murray M. Brown, Descendents of Isaac Amsden of CambridgeMassachusetts, (1934).
