The following information about Asa was obtained from The Ancestry ofSarah Jane Amsden Smith, author unknown.
Asa's father is believed to be Isaac Smith. Asa was first married toMartha Anna Hannen McShannion who died in 1819. From this marriage,children were Rueben Smith, who migrated to Alamakee Co. Iowa, andLucinda Smith Parrish, who lived in Hardin County Iowa. They may havelived in the area of Kentucky where Mammoth cave is located.
The second wife was Clorissa Gordon. They were married in Louisvilleand farmed between Lexington and Winchester, Kentucky in Clark andFayette Counties. It is said they had some 2,000 acres and paid taxesin two counties. They had slaves which they freed before the CivilWar. Clorissa had some 400 acres of tobacco herself, and her slaveshad planted mustard between the rows for an extra crop to sell. WhenClorissa found out, she beat them with a stick.
All of Asa's ancestry has been passed word of mouth and there is norecall beyond his parents.

Asa Smith was born near Winchester, Kentucky, March 16, 1833 anddied March 13, 1916. aged 82 years, 11 months and 27 days. He came toIowa in the winter of 1857 and was married to Miss Sarah Jane Amsden,April 3, 1859. In 1872 he moved onto the farm which has since becomehis home. He is survived by one sister Mrs. Matilda Noel of Kentucky,his wife Sarah Jane and eight children.
