Milliken, James Patten (1803 - 1863) - male b. 16 OCT 1803 in Surry,Hancock, Massachusetts d. 23 May 1863 in Walnut Hills, Warren,Mississippi father: Milliken, Elias(1765 - 1846) mother: Milliken,Mary Patten(~1769 - 1835) He was a state representative and statesenator from Dearborn County, Indiana. He ran on the "Free Soil" Partyfor Lt. Governor. James emigrated to Indiana with his parents when hewas fourteen. He engaged in farming and later in merchandising whilestill holding his farm. He took an active part in political affairsand became an ardent advocate of the cause of temperance. He waselected twice as a Representative in the State Legislature in1841-1842 and twice as a Senator serving six years from 1846-1852,representing Dearborn County, Indiana. He served with distinction inthese honorable positions and was presented with a silver cup by theladies of Lawrenceburg for his bold advocacy of temperancelegislation. James was one of the founders of the ManchesterUniversalist Church together with Israel Noyes Jr. and Gilbert Platt.James sold his farm in Dearborn County, Indiana in 1858 and moved tonear Kirksville, Missouri. He and Guy Chandler cast the first twovotes for Abraham Lincoln at Kirksville in 1860. As an outspokenanti-slavery man, he was soon marked by the pro-slavery party and hislife was threatened. He was compelled to go constantly armed. Hisfriends of both parties advised him to leave the State. He disposed ofhis farm and settled in Davis County, Iowa in 1861. Always a warmpatriotic citizen, he chafed under the rebellious acts of the Southuntil he entered the Union Army at age 59. Enlisting in Capt. Clark'sCompany (Company B, 30th Iowa Volunteer Infantry) of Drakesville,Iowa, he was appointed Second Lieutenant August 9, 1862 and musteredinto service September 23, 1862. The 30th Iowa Infantry went to thefront in October and was at the attack on Hayne's Bluff in the rear ofVicksburg, December 27 and 28, 1862. Also in the battle of ArkansasPost, January 11, 1863. Lt. Milliken was promoted to Major of the 30thIowa over all the other line officers of the regiment for gallantry inbattles, his commission dating April 19, 1863. He was with the 30thIowa on the memorable Vicksburg campaign which began on April 20,1863. He was in the famous crossing of the Mississippi at Brumsburgand Hardtimes; at the Battles of Port Gibson, Edward's Ferry, Raymond,Clinton, and at the capture of Jackson, the capital of the State ofMississippi. He also took part in the battles of Champion Hills andBlack Hills as the rebels were driven back into Vicksburg. James wasmortally wounded at Vicksburg on May 22, 1863 while gallantly leadingthe 30th Iowa in the great charge. He died of his wounds on May 23,1863 at Walnut Hills, Mississippi at age 60. He was loved andrespected by his command, and his death was lamented by all who knewhim.
