Judge A.J. Cotton died in Lewiston, Maine. Feb. 16th 1875, aged 74years and 9 months. He died suddenly with pneumonia. His sickness wasshort and severe. Judge Cotton was born in Pownal Me.,where he inhumble and retired circumstances lived with his parents until he wasabout 18 years of age. At that early time of life he started alone andwent to the then far West, when the country was new and unsettled.There in the forest he became a man, a preacher of the Gospel, ateacher of the youth, a poet and author, and a Judge on the bench forabout 12 years. there he spent about fifty years in labors moreabundant. He was successful in all he undertook to do. When about 15years of age he was enabled to give his heart to the savior of lostmen, and became wonderful happy in the love of God. Soon after this hefelt that God called him to active and public life. He was faithful tothe call. When about 18 years of age he was licensed by the church ofhis choice to hold public meetings, and in due time he was ordained adeacon and then an Elder in the M.E. Church. And for near 60 years hewas an active, reliable and acceptable member of the Church. About 55of that time he was in the ministry. Much might be said in his praisebut it is unnecessary; his works praise him. He fell at hisim but ashort time before he died. But God has -----tained her, and we trustthe will and --- reward for her kind attention toward him. F.S. RICH

Feb., 1819, Dorothy Noyes, daughter of Israel and Elizabeth PrinceNoyes, who also went to Indiana from Pownal, ME.; had five children.Alfred Johnson Cotton was the fourth child of William (5) Cotton(William 4, Thomas 3, John 2, William 1). From COTTON'S KEEPSAKE, by Rev. Judge A.J. (Jude) Cotton, publishedfor the author by Applegate & Co., 1858 at Cincinnati, p. 474: Thefirst cabin was raised here in 1815, by Robert McCracken, now residingin the eastern end of the county. He informed me, the other day, thathe cut his own road clear from Cambridge -- that his nearest neighborwas four or five miles distant, and he that much farther west than anyother white man, in the depths of an unbroken and interminablewilderness. His Indian and wild beast stories are some, and tallywith similar reports everywhere. Two years after he settled in theforest, quite "a Yankee colony" arrived, and he sold out to the Rev.Daniel.
