There is much controversy surrounding the person of Robert Huestis.In an attempt to help clarify what is known from what is speculated, Ihave used the work of Gordon L. Remington, F.U.G.A., that waspresented in the New York Genealogical and Bigraphical Register, Vol129 Number 1 through 4, 1998 as the authority on this man, but havealso tried to included information from other sources. Event datesand places in individual records are from the above work of Mr.Remington.
This article states that he "probably" married first, in Bridport,Dorset, England, Anne Moon and that he was "probably" the Robert"Hewstes" taxed at Pilsdon, Dorset, England. He appears to havepreceded his family to New England in 1635 although they must havejoined him in early 1640.
The Will of Robert Heusted that follows is included also in Mr.Remington's article.

Robert's will was "legally proued at Stamford 4th Nouem' 1654."

The following was contributed by Marie Heustis. Robert came toAmerica in 1635, leaving England by way of Weymouth, England, on Mar20 1635.
History of Stamford Connecticut 1641-1868, by Rev. E. B. Huntington,A.M., pg 35, describes:
Husted, Robert, was one of the company who received land in October1642. He had come from Mount Wollaston, now Braintree, Mass. He isprobably the father of that Robert Hustis who, according to Bolton'sWestchester, went from Fairfield to Westchester in 1654. His will,dated Jul 8, 1652, makes bequests to his son Angel, of all his landsin Greenwich, with housing; to his son Robert all his lands inStamford, with cattle and housing; to his wife a maintenance and otherbequests; and to his daughter Ann, 10 pounds. In 1654, his widowElizabeth, by will makes bequests to her son Angel of Greenwich; toRobert of Stamford; and to her daughter Ann, the wife of RichardHardy.
In the will of Robert the name is Husted, and in that of the widow hername is written Hustis and both are equally distinct, and that theyrefer to the same family, is also clear as the form of the name. Thenames of the children are also changed from Husted to Hustis, thoughin the second will the name is spelled both Hustes and Hustis.
Ye Historie of Ye Town of Greenwich by Spencer P. Mead, pages 576 and577, has HUSTED FAMILY. This was "Compiled by Spencer P. Mead, LL.B.,with the assistance of the Hon. James W. Husted, A.B., LL.B., of theNew York Bar, Peekskill, NY. Robert Husted, born probably in CountySomerset, England, in 1596, sailed for Massachusetts in 1635, where heremained for a few years, and then removed to Stamford, Connecticut.He was a witness in July 1640, to the Indian deed of Greenwich, OldTown, to Robert Feaks, and David Patrick, and was granted a parcel ofland at Stamford in October 1642, and died there in 1652, owning landin both Stamford and Greenwich. His widow Elizabeth, survived him, anddied at Stamford, in 1654. There (sic) children were Angell, Ann, andRobert.
1. Angell, b. in England, about 1620, settled in Greenwich, Conn.,where he d. in April, 1706. He was witness in July 1640, to the Indiandeed of Greenwich, Old Town, to Robert Feaks, and Daniel Patrick, andwas one of the original patentees named in the patent granted to theTown of Greenwich, in May, 1665.
2. Ann, b. in England, about 1626, d. December 12, 1707, m. atStamford, Conn., in 1650, Richard Hardy, and had: Sarah, Samuel,Hannah, Susannah, Ruth, Mary and Abigail.
3. Robert, b. in England, about 1626, m. at Stamford, Conn., January9, 1955 (sic) Elizabeth Buxton, removed to Westchester County, NY,where he d. November 23, 1704, and had: Robert, Samuel, John,Jonathan, David, Elizabeth, Sarah and Mary."

John Husted also indicates that Frome Somerset is the incorrect birthlocation for Robert the immigrant. Frome, Dorset is a vicinity offew, if any, peiple, surrounding a small church near Maiden Newton. Itis located a short distance northwest of Dorchester. John has apicture of the church taken by a former resident of Bournemouth. Hereports that the church is so small that a dozen people would make acrowd. He has been told that the church was originally built about1250 AD, torn up by invaders and rebuilt about 1400 AD.
John also maintains that there is no proof that Robert was the son ofLawrence, and was not the grandson of John, Chaplin to the queen. Theofficial records in London, and on the Isle of Wight clearly show thatno John Husted (or variant spelling) was ever a chaplain to the queen.John has corresponded with the county recorder of the Isel of Wightwho reports there is no Husted there. The chaplain to the queen isburied there, and his name is not Husted. He also heard from Mr.Kitching of the Public Record Office in London, 17 May 1979 that nosuch person as John Husted is listed in the patent of appointments aschaplain to Queen Elizabeth.
I also asked John about information on Elizabeth's birthdate. Hereports that records of Dorchester indicate a christening for anElizabeth Miller, but thre is nothing to secure this as thechristening of our Elizabeth. He also states that some have tried toestablish Elizabeth as "society", however, he feels there is doubt tothat. There is some evidence she could neither read or write. Herhusband, Robert, could not read or write, nor could her children."
Note from McLeester - The inability to read or write is not uncommonat all in the time frame we are addressing whether one of of "society"or not.
