Daniel Mathews was born about 1761, probably in New Hampshire. Duringthe Revolutionary War, he served in the New Hampshire militia fromMarch 1776 to March 1777, during which time he was with theContinental forces besieging the British in Boston, and his unit wentto New York City and Albany. He fought in the battle of LakeChamplain. When his enlistment expired, he was left sick in Albany inMarch 1777. He later served aboard the Continental frigate theHancock. He was involved in a battle against the British ship the Fox.When the Hancock was captured by the British ship Rainbow, he wastaken prisoner of war and spent ten months as a British prisoner inHalifax, Nova
Scotia. Following his service in the Revolutionary war, he establishedhis family in Maine, living in Cushing, Lincoln County; Surrey,Hancock County; and finally in Stetson, Penobscot County. He died in1823 in Stetson, Maine.
Sarah, the wife of Daniel Mathews, was born about 1757. We have foundno indication of her surname or place of birth. She died probably inStetson, Maine, sometime after the death of her husband.
Jonas Matthews, the son of Daniel and Sarah Mathews [Daniel most oftenspelled his name with a single "t" while Jonas most frequently spelledhis name with a double "tt"]. Jonas was born in Maine in 1787. Hemarried Susannah Milliken, who was the daughter of Elias Milliken andhis wife Mary
Patten. Susannah Milliken was also the sister of Matthew Milliken, whomarried Jonas' Matthews' sister Margaret. The marriage took placeabout 1808, probably in Stetson, Maine. They were the parents of 11children. In 1817, his family moved to Dearborn County, Indiana, andbriefly to Boone County Kentucky, before returning to Dearborn County,Indiana. Before 1850 he and several of his children moved to St.Joseph County, Indiana. In 1864 Jonas and several of his childrenmoved to Barry County, Michigan, where Jonas and his wife SusannahMilliken Matthews died in 1871 and 1885 respectively.
Descendants of Jonas Matthews, who are discussed in this volumeinitially lived in southern Indiana, northern Indiana, and in centralMichigan. Surnames of his descendants are:

She marriedMatthew Milliken, who was the son of Elias Milliken and his wife MaryPatten. Matthew Milliken was the brother of Susannah Milliken, whomarried Margaret Matthews' brother Jonas. The marriage of MargaretMatthews and Matthew Milliken took place on 26
December 1811, probably in Stetson, Maine. They were the parents of 9children. In 1817, Margaret Matthews Milliken and her family moved toDearborn County, Indiana. After the death of her first husband,Margaret Matthews married Gilbert Platt in Dearborn County, Indiana.We have not found
a death date or place for Margaret Matthews. The Children of MargaretMatthews Milliken were initially located in Dearborn County, Indiana,although some branches later moved to St. Joseph County, Indiana. Onebranch moved to Nebraska.
