Original data from Fink. Margie Heustis notes that Oliver appearson the 1820 Census, Dearborn Co., IN Manchester Twp. Chefalo sentimage copies ot these census records.
1850 Census, Dearborn Co., IN Manchester Twp. Aug 27 1850 pg 349
Oliver Heustis, 56, M, Farmer, $7000, NY
Laura Heustis, 56, F, CT
Rhoda Heustis, 84, F, NY
George Smith, 19, M, Blacksmith, Germany
Henry Brandt, 17, M, Farmer, Germany
1860 Census, Dearborn Co., IN Manchester Twp.
Oliver Heustis, 66, M, farmer, 10,000, 1200, b NY
Levinia Heustis, 66, F, b NY
Rhoda Heustis, 89, F, b NY
Philip Lots, 22, M, domestic, b Bavaria
Catherine Lots, 19, F, domestic, b Bavaria
1870 Census, Dearborn Co., IN Manchester Twp.
Oliver Heustis, 77. M, W, retired farmer, 10,800, 575, b NY
John H., Heustis, 26, M, W, farmer, b IN
Mary Heustis, 19, F, W, b IN
Pheonetta Mary Heustis, 1, F, W, b IN
Notes from McLeester - It seems apparent that the Oliver here is oursubject. It was not clear until Chefalo investigated the FederalCensus records in Mar 2002, who John H. was. As it turns out, he isOliver's grandson. The other family members are John's wife anddaughter. Fink had noted that in 1860 we find the following familyliving next door to Oliver and Levinia.
Sarah Heustis, 36, F, b IN
John Heustis, 16, M, b IN
Albert Heustis, 14, M, b IN
and in the 1870 census, living next door to Oliver, John, Mary, andPheonetta are this family -
Albert Heustis, 24, M, W, farmer, b IN
Anna Heustis, 19, F, W, b IN
Sarah Heustis, 45, F, W, b IN
We now know the relationship of the Sarah who was head of household inthe 1860 census and a member of the next household in the 1870 censusto our Oliver and family. She is the daughter-in-law of Oliver andboth Albert and John are his grandsons.
Margie Heustis supplied birth and death places, and offers that Oliverappears on the 1820 Dearborn Co., IN Manchester Township Census.
Liening supplied the following:
1850 Census Manchester Township, Dearborn Co., IN Dwelling 33, Family33., p. 349
Oliver Heustis, age 54, Male, Farmer with $7,000. in property, bornNew York.
Lavina Heustis, age 54, female, born Connecticut
Rhoda Heustis, age 84, female, born New York
George Smith, age 19, male, blacksmith, born Germany
Henry Brandt, age 17, male, farmer, born Germany
Perhaps these last 2 were boarders since the Heustis' had an inn.
Note from McLeester - I have an Oliver Heustis in the Tibbettsdatabase and the Oliver given here. Liening attributes the followingto the Oliver here but I believe it is probably better placed with theOliver of the Tibbetts line. There is a possiblity that the twoOlivers are one and the same but I have not been able to make adefinite conclusion. The Bible of John E. Heustis lists our Oliverclearly as the son of William and Rhoda Heustis and gives his birth asOct 11 1793.
From COTTON'S KEEPSAKE, by Rev. Judge A.J. "Jude" Cotton, publishedfor the author by Applegate & Co., Cincinnati, p. 475:
Old mother Heustis is very smart and active at the age of 86 years, and wonderful fine old lady.
O. Heustis' Inn: In all my extensive travels. I have never found abetter landlord and landlady, in one establishment, that Mr. & Mrs.Heustis. Friend Heustis has more quaint sayings and amusing anecdotesto amuse and entertain his guests than any other man I ever saw, inhis calling; and Mrs.
Heustis is an A- Number-1 landlady against the world, for a neat andexcellent cook; and the happy faculty of making herself companionableand agreeable to her guests, and, at the same time, preserving her ownproper dignity and self-respect, she posses in an eminent degree. They keep an excellent house, good fare, and reasonable bills.

From HISTORY OF DEARBORN & OHIO COUNTIES, IN From Their EarliestSettlement,
LDSFHC 977.21, H2R 1977, film 924510, items 1-2, p. 541:
Oliver Heustis was one who would have been recognized as a man ofintelligence in any society. He was a constant reader and it may besaid was a student all his life. He was well posted on all politicalquestions and familiar with history. He was a good talker and verymuch enjoyed
pleasant and intelligent conversation, indeed it might be said thatthat was his forte, for Mr. Heusts was not a gifted public speaker, but when he did take part on important occasions what he did say wassensible and to the point. Mr. Heustis was twice elected to theLegislature (1832, 1844), as a
member, he was regarded as a practicable man of principle andunyielding integrity. His life was spared to see the day of thiscentennial year.
