Aurora Plummer married Stokeley Dils in May 1829 Dearborn Co. IN.Daughter Lucy A. was born c1832; son Luther was b. c1834; dau. Harrietc1838; dau. Aurora Bragdon c1840; Louisa c1843; Sarah Jane Nov. 14,1844; Stokeley D. c1848; Virginia c 1849. P erhaps they had a son born1830/31 or 1836 named Daniel who died young. I believe Stokeley' sfather was Henry Dils. Luther was not a Dils name. Son Stokeley D.,by the way, changed the spelling of his surname to Dills -- a commonchange in the south. He lived in Decatur, IL.

Chefalo supplied the following - Daniel appears in the 1820 IN USCensus in Dearborn Co. among the ME migrants. He was the leader ofthe expedition. Obituary notice of Rev. Daniel Plummer from theIndiana Hoosier State 24 Nov 1858 ed. Rev. Daniel Plummer was born inthe town of Scarborough, ME 4 Apr 1784. At age of 17 he embarked as asailor on a vessel bound for the West Indies. During the voyage hevisited the islands of Haiti, Dominigo, & others of the same group.Upon his return home he found his parents, especially his invalidmother, anxious for him to remain near home, & being somewhatdissatisfied with a sailor's life, he commenced the pursuit ofagriculture. About the year 1804 he was converted and became activein the M.E. Church. Feeling that his work was not begun he set aboutpreparing for the ministry & in 1806 he was licensed to preach, & in1814 he was ordained Deacon. A kind fortune had smiled upon hisjuvenile years & early manhood, & now he found himself possessed of acomfortable home & happily settled life. But soon the financialinterests of New England were shaken by the crisis brought on by theWar of 1812. Brother Plummer shared largely in these reverses; it wasnot a question of how to evade the law and reserve most for self &family, but how shall I best meet the demands against me; & maintainmy honor as a man? Promptly by this spirit of integrity he sooncanceled the claims against him & found himself without money; but notwithout friends. Many & generous were proposals to re-establish himin business & retain him in Durham. But preferring to rely on his ownresources & formed a purpose of building up a home in the, then, almost unbroken wilderness of IN. A colony of enterprising men &women who were willing to brave the dangers & endure the hardships ofa frontier life was soon organized & on the 24 Sep 1817 amid theweeping of friends they bid adieu to the homes of childhood & startedon their long journey of hundreds of miles through mountain passes &rugged vales which gave little evidence that the foot of man had evertrod there before. Of this little band were 14 families mostlywarm-hearted Christians. As they tarried by the wayside surroundingthe campfire or observing the sacred rites of the Sabbath in Nature'sbroad, heaven-arched sanctuary, the song of praise & thanksgiving wentup to God, rendering cheerful the desert waste of their wearypilgrimage. Upon such occasions the Rev. Plummer ministered to thelittle band of disciples in holy things. It required many weeks toaccomplish this toilsome journey, & not until winter did they arriveat their point of destination. On 9 Dec they arrived in Lawrenceburg.Brother Plummer remained here until spring when he moved to a wildpiece of land in Manchester & commenced opening up a farm for hisfuture home. After he had comfortably settled, he set aboutorganizing a church society having brought with him from the eastletters of church membership for some of the company who came withhim, & others who came before. In the early settlement of thiscountry as in all countries, churches & schoolhouses were few & farbetween. Consequently private homes had to serve as temples for Divineworship. Brother Plummer's house & some others were used for thispurpose for several years until a small building could be erectedwhich served the double purpose of church & schoolroom. In the year1820 at Cincinnati, Brother Plummer was ordained Elder, but stillcontinued to labor as a local preacher. As time rolled on the littlebrick church settled, separated & was about to fall in & the peoplebecame alarmed & would not meet where they felt their livesendangered. They did not feel able to rebuild or resume meeting inprivate dwellings & the church became disorganized. Brother Plummer'shouse or barn as the congregation required again were thrown open forthe people. At length he formulated a plan of repairing & enlarginghis residence. Everything was in readiness to commence work when anidea suggestive of public good suspended further prosecution of thedesign. Would it not be better to erect a temple to the living Godthan to tear down a comfortable house & build a palace? The generousimpulse soon determined his will in favor of such an appropriation offunds and materials. Without delay the work commenced & was sooncompleted & the brick chapel with a clear title tendered to & acceptedby the M.E. Church. A few individuals who were unwilling for oneperson to bear the entire expense now came forward & contributedliberally to Brother Plummer. In 1836 at urgent solicitation of hisfriends he consented to be a candidate for the State Senate, waselected & served his county as senator during the most trying periodof her history, when the question of removal of the county seat & thedivision of the county was being agitated. In the fall of 1851 hemoved with the younger members of his family to Aurora. Here hepreached his last & may we say his semicentuary sermon. It beingdelivered just fifty years from the time he was licensed to preach, afact he was not aware of at the time. In the fall of '57 he returnedto Manchester to spend his remaining days. Although Brother Plummernever entered the Itinerary, yet, when able to travel he always hadhis regular Sabbath and evening appointments & embraced as his fieldof labor, the wide-spread territory which now forms some half dozencircuits. As a minister he was faithful & possessed of more thanordinary ability. Religion was a fixed principle which he was neverknown to compromise. In his death the church has lost a strongpillar, the young a wise counselor, and society, an affable & usefulmember. PP198 Shaws 1915: 1815 Mark McCracken & brother Robert &their mother located on site of Manchester. In 1817 he sold out toRev. Daniel Plummer, spiritual leader of a large emigration fromCumberland Co., ME - 78 persons in all. It was spoken of in thepapers of the times as "the great land fleet". Their route wasthrough Portland, ME, Albany,NY, to the headwaters of the Allegheny atOlean, NY by boat and raft to Pittsburg and down the Ohio toLawrenceburg, IN. Most of the group settled on Greenbriar Ridge - nowthe village of Manchester. McCracken said "in site where Plummerlocated no less than 5 families on 199 or more acres cleared, on landsold Plummer only 5 acres cleared." Some 20 families lived within 1mile of Plummer after the ME colony settled there. In 1876 George W.Lane in an article in the Aurora Independent relates "Daniel Plummerwas a man worthy of remembrance & entitled to a more extended noticethan the writer can indulge in. No friend of other days is called tomind with more pleasing associations. He was not only a good man, butwanted all others to be good. His example corresponded to hisprecepts. His daily walk was a rebuke to the evil disposed & his kindwords well calculated to encourage them to seek the paths ofrectitude. Mr. Plummer took no pains to secure public favor with aview to obtaining office, though well qualified and worthy. His moral& religious training led him into channels of a higher & more usefulcharacter (than politics), yet the people without solicitation on hispart, elected him to the State Senate in 1834, which office hehonored, instead of the office honoring him. He discharged the dutiesof the position honestly, faithfully & acceptably to the people. Itrequired enterprise & resolution to sever ties of home &
familiar places, but the Ohio fever beckoned. The early settlers wereplain men & women of good sense, without the refinements that luxurybrings & with great contempt for sham & pretense. The majoritybelonged to the middle class. Page 390: Manchester circuit was setoff from Lawrenceburg Circuit just as soon as it showed sufficientstrength to support a preacher. The first Methodist organization heldmeetings in the frame barn built by Rev. Daniel Plummer; it isthought, as early as 1822 the congregation built a frame church atManchester. This building poorly built & not large. Replaced in 1876by the present structure. At Wright's Corner is located anotherChurch of Methodists that was built about 1855 & has been kept in goodcondition. Other early settlers mentioned Heustis from NY 1819; Wm.Dils from WV 1816; Judge Alfred Cotton, Congers from NJ 1817;McMullins from PA 1817. Newspaper Article: REV. PLUMMER AND FOLLOWERSOPEN FARMS IN MANCHESTER: As a bicentennial focus on local history, the DAR has submitted articles on the early families who settled here. This week they tell us about the Plummer family. Several accounts arein print about the settlement of lower Manchester (Plummertown) byRev. Daniel Plummer, spiritual leader of a group of 78 persons wholeft their homes in Scarborough, Maine 24 Sep 1817 & journeyedoverland to Olean, NY then by river to Pittsburgh and down the Ohio toLawrenceburg where they arrived 9 Dec. In the spring they opened upfarms in the Manchester area. Rev. Plummer purchased land from MarkMcCracken. His brothers, Joseph & Luther purchased government land.It is not known why their elderly father, Samuel did not buygovernment land, possibly because he had lost a leg due to a fallingtree. He had been a soldier in the Revolutionary War & his gravestonein Wrights Corner cemetery was marked by Col. Archibald Lochry ChapterDAR 7 Nov 1926. The forebears of the Plummer brothers, Francis andwife Ruth & 3 children, came to America from London, England in 1643on the ship Hector & landed at Ipswitch, MA. In 1836, Plummer was electedto State Senate during a trying period of history when the removal ofthe county seat & division of the county was being agitated. Historyrelates the Methodist system with a circuit riding ministercontributed much to the sobriety & general tranquility of thecommunity. The preacher astride his horse sought out each cabin in thewilderness, often leaving a Bible. Rev. Plummer's home was widelyknown as a "Free Methodist Tavern," although no intoxicating drinkswere served. Daniel Plummer is credited with making the first haypress in the township. In the fall of 1851 he moved with the youngermembers of his family to Aurora & preached his semi-century sermon. Heremained in Aurora until 1857 when he returned to Manchester where hedied. A few days before his death on 11 Sep 1858, his childrengathered, some from distant states. Article from the Aurora, INJournal-Press dated 13 Sep 1977: DAR CHAPTER TO DEDICATE GRAVESTONEMARKER SUNDAY Col. Archibald Lochry Chapter DAR will dedicate amarker on the gravestone of Rev. Daniel Plummer at Zion MethodistCemetery, Wrights Corner, at 2 p.m. Sunday, 18 Sep. The date waschosen because most Methodist churches observe that day as Ministers'Sunday. Married Lucy Smith Freeman (2 children).Methodist. Moved to Dearborn Co., IN in 1818. Minister; farmer;miller; owned carding & grist mill at Lower Manchester. Whig.English; Weakley-DOS; Correspondence. From "HISTORY OF DEARBORN &OHIO COUNTIES, INDIANA", FHC 977.21 H2A, film 924510, items 1-2: p541,last paragraph: At this time throughout the Eastern States, especially in ME, the people had what was termed the "Ohio Fever," &there was a great tide of immigration to that State. "In the fall of1817 15 families from about one neighborhood in ME, and 11 of them, with ten wagons, 24 horses, & 78 souls, started off together fromCumberland Co. in one day. It was a great move, & excited thecuriosity of the country through which they passed; they were spokenof as a great 'land fleet.' Their route was through the beautifulcities of Portland, Haverhill, to Albany; thence up the fertile valleyof the Mohawk; thence across to Olean Point, on the headwaters of theAlleghany; thence down the river, in boats & on rafts, to Pittsburgh;thence down the beautiful Ohio to Lawrenceburgh, in IN, where theycast anchor, cabled up & sought each a resting place & a home in thethen wilds of the West, & most of them located on what was then calledGreen Brier Ridge, now known as the Pleasant Village of Manchester, among whom was the Rev. Daniel Plummer, so favorably & extensivelyknown. p.542 Robert McCracken, in referring to the coming of DanielPlummer, remarked: "In the section where Plummer located there wereno less than 5 families living, & 100 or more acres cleared, and 5acres cleared on the tract of land I sold him." Some 20 families wereliving within one mile of him when he came. The following history ofthe early settlers of the township was written in 1876, by George W .Lane, & published in the Aurora Independent: "Soon after the war oneof the most important settlements for number & character was made inManchester Township. They suffered many hardships & indeed manydeprivations, but they stood their ground like Christian martyrs, &many lived to see tall oaks utilized for other purposes & removed tomake room for houses, barns & meadows, & in less than a decade theridge for miles was under a high state of cultivation, & in the fall, rows of teams would be seen on the road hauling off the surplus oftheir farms & cooper shops. The last was carried on for a number ofyears, as Manchester was studded over with heavy timber, the tallest &largest trees this side of California. p. 543, paragraph 4: "DanielPlummer was a man worthy of remembrance & entitled to a more extendednotice than the writer can indulge in. No friend of other days iscalled to mind with more pleasing associations. He was not only a goodman, but he wanted all others to be good. His example correspondedwith his precepts. His daily walk was a rebuke to the evil disposed,& his kind words well-calculated to encourage them to seek the pathsof rectitude. Mr. Plummer took no pains to secure public favor with aview to obtaining office, though well-qualified and worthy. His moral& religious training led him into channels of a higher & more usefulcharacter, yet the people without solicitation on his part, electedhim to the State Senate in 1834, which office he honored, instead ofthe office honoring him. He discharged the duties of the positionhonestly, faithfully & acceptably to the people. Page 549, paragraph2: Daniel Plummer made the first hay press used in the township. It is also said that he built the first frame house, & first frame barn inthe township. In 1876 the house was standing after sixty years'service. The barn was built not??? from the same time, & was used asthe first church in the township after it was built, the house servingfor that purpose until the barn was erected. These ancient buildings, together with the homestead, are the property of ex-Sheriff Frank R.Dorman, who takes pride in keeping them as near what they first wereas possible. Churches, Graveyards & Schools: Just above it is statedthat the first frame house in the township & the first frame barn werebuilt by Rev. Daniel Plummer, & were respectively used at times asplaces of worship. Probably as early as 1822 or 1823, the Methodistsin that section of the country, erected at Manchester or Plummertown,a frame church building, which they occupied for a number of years, when it was replaced by a brick house for the same purpose. Thisbuilding was found to be too small for the congregation, & wascracked, perhaps too hastily built, & was soon replaced by a second &larger brick edifice. For matter of convenience in 18?? (illegible)the present neat & substantial frame church building was built in whatmay be termed Middle Manchester, & the old brick was abandoned. Theedifice last erected is quite showy, having a tall cupola, with spireand bell. The chare is on the Manchester Circuit. Among those whofirst worshipped in the house, barn, & old frame, & were instrumentalin organizing & supporting the church were the Plummer family, ofwhich there were a number, the McMullens, some of the Roberts &others. According to Sally Whosewoods@aol.com: Evidently the reasonfor the 15 families (including Daniel & Luther Plummer & 5 Robertsfamilies) leaving Cumberland Co., ME was the summer of 1815 was socold & rainy that the crops didn't mature -- it was known as the"Black Winter." There is more about the Plummers in the countyhistory of Dearborn Co., IN beginning at page 353. Taken from anarticle in the Lawrenceburg Register, 25 Nov 1926: " In the years1815,1816,1817, what was called the "Ohio Fever" prevailed to a greatextent throughout the East & especially in the state of Maine. Manyfarmers became discouraged, sold out their possessions, bade farewellto their friends & emigrated to the 'then' far west. Fifteen familiesleft Durham, ME., in the fall of 1817. Their route was throughPortland , Haverhill, MA., Albany, NY, to Pittsburgh, then down theOhio to Lawrenceburg, where they cast anchor. The journey occupiedsix weeks. Among these pioneers were the Plummers - Joseph, Luther &the Rev. Daniel, with their venerable father, Samuel, then 73 years ofage. Many of these emigrants settled on Greenbriar Ridge, latercalled Plummertown, now known as Manchester. All was one vastunbroken wilderness save here & there a little cabin. Luther Plummerestablished the first store in the community & the Rev. Daniel builtthe first frame house which served as a church for these earlyself-sacrificing Methodists. From COTTON'S KEEPSAKE, by Rev. JudgeA.J. (Jude) Cotton, published for the author by Applegate & Co., 1858at Cincinnati, p. 474: The first cabin was raised here in 1815, byRobert McCracken, now residing in the eastern end of the county. Heinformed me, the other day, that he cut his own road clear fromCambridge -- that his nearest neighbor was four or five miles distant,& he that much farther west than any other white man, in the depths ofan unbroken & interminable wilderness. His Indian & wild beaststories are some, & tally with similar reports everywhere. Two yearsafter he settled in the forest, quite "a Yankee colony" arrived, & hesold out to the Rev. Daniel. Page 481: I have purposely withheld anotice of the Rev. Daniel Plummer until the last, because I reallythink that both the church & the community here are more deeplyindebted to him than to any other man or minister in our midst. He leda colony of enterprizing men who settled here, & made Manchestermainly what it now is. As a minister, he has been at the beck & callof everybody by night & by day. & 40 years of able, eloquent, &efficient ministerial services, as a gratuity, is no small item. ThenElder Plummer has paid a liberal quarterage both for himself & family, during all this time. His house, too, has been thronged as "a freeMethodiest tavern," as his good lady can well testify of a truth.Added to this, the beautiful brick church here is almost an entiregratuity at his hands. Who, then , has done as much for naught?Taking sermons, orations, temperance lectures, & Sabbath schooladdresses all together, I suppose my public addresses would ratheroutnumber his or any other man's hereabouts. But otherwise ElderPlummer stands head and shoulders above all around him. And taken allin all together, there is no one like him. Through his ministry I wasawakened, though converted under the labors of another. By hisministration I was married to my good lady, forty years ago. I havesat under his ministry all that time, both with pleasure & profit. And surely, but for my venerable good mother, I should have inscribedmy little book to him. And this acknowledgement of it here amounts toabout the same thing . Elder Plummer has been a man of great physicaland mental energies -- is now somewhat advanced in years, & frail &feeble -- a mere shadow of his former self. But could a painter, witha skillful hand, sketch his life, in his most vigorous, palmiest days,it would be a picture "worth dimes," and "worth beholding." He has"served his day and generation" well & faithfully, & in all humanprobability, will soon "hear from on high: 'It is enough -- come uphither. Enter though into the joy of thy Lord.'" This is no vain, fulsome compliment , but the grateful tribute of an old friend -- ofan honest heart. 1850 U.S. Census, Manchester Township, Dearborn Co.,IN.
