From the "Tiller & Toiler," February ? 1918:
Edwin Heustis was born 3 Aug 1831 in Dearborn County, IN., anddeparted this life 20 Feb 1918, at the home of his daughter, Mrs.Percy Lierle, at Wilroads, KS., where he had gone on a visit.
He was bereft of his parents at an early age, his father having diedwhen he was eight years old, and his mother following three yearslater. He, with his younger brother and sister, went to live with hisgrandparents, Rev. G.H. Plummer, a Methodist minister, with whom hemade his home until he was 21, when he went to Missouri and lived withan uncle for 5 years.
In 1857 he went to Marshall County, IL., where in 1859 he was unitedin marriage to Laura M. Nichols. To this union eight children wereborn. In 1876, he with his wife and family came to Pawnee County andtook a claim, where they lived through the hardships of frontier lifeand finally enjoyed seeing the barren prairies turned into fields ofwaving grain and to see the automobile take the place of the ox team.
He was converted and joined the Methodist church when a young man andremained in that church until five years ago, when he became a memberof the Baptist church, his wife being a member of that faith. He hadalways been a kind and loving husband and father, a good neighbor andfriend.
He leaves to mourn his loss two daughters and one son, Mrs. JuliusGrabczweske of Larned, with whom he had made his home for almost fiveyears, Mrs. Percy Lierle of Wilroads, KS., and Daniel W. Heustis ofKansas City, KS., and nine grandchildren, five children, and the agedwife and mother having preceded him to the better world. Also hisbrother and sister. The two daughters were at his bedside when the endcame, the son having had to return home a few days before. He waspatient through all and put his faith in his Heavenly Father whome hesaid "doeth all things well."
The funeral services were held from the First Methodist EpiscopalChurch of Larned and were in charge of the Dr. John W. Waldron.
Interment was in the Larned Cemetery where he was laid to rest by theside of his wife.
Submitter's note: Edwin's grandfather was Rev. Daniel Plummer ofManchester, Dearborn County, IN. G.H. Plummer was his uncle, and maywell be the uncle he went to Missouri to live with for a time, although I haven't pinned that down yet.
