In the History of Licking Co., OH [G929.1771L618his] the following is found: "Philip and Annie (Harvey) Barrick, were natives of Frederick Co., MD, and accompanied their respectivefamilies to Hampshire Co., VA, where they met and married. Moving toVienna, OH, they there resided for two or three years. As early as1796 they came to Licking Co., OH, being thus the earliest settlers ofwhom this volume gives any record." The History of Licking Co., OH[977.154 L618Li] for Licking Township reads: "Philip Barrack [sic]was, probably, the first permanent settler of this township. He was anative of Maryland, and early determined to make his home in Ohio.Accordingly, with his trusty rifle on his shoulder, his wife mountedon a two year old filly, and a few articles of clothing bound to theback of a two year old heifer, he started for Marietta, and after atedious journey of some weeks, reached that place. Not liking thelocality, he ascended the Muskingum river in a conoe, and finally theLicking river. This was in 1798. He squatted near where the Claypoolmills now are until the spring of 1801 (some accounts say 1801), whenhe removed six or eight miles further up the valley, settling near theLicking narrows. He was a man of energy, industry, enterprise, influence, conducting successfully his farm, together with a tavernand a distillery. His daughter, Millie, was probably the first whitechild born "on the waters of the Licking." His first cabin, ordwelling, in this township was built near the spacious brick heafterward erected, and consisted of merely a pen of round logs, withbut three sides, the fourth being left open for the fire, somethingafter the style of a sugar-camp house. He was a man of considerabletact, and fertile in those expedients, by which he was enabled toconduct his business without the aid of those special tools which madeindustrial pursuits comparatively easy at a later day. Much is yettold of his leathewood traces, will bark gears, husk collars, etc.".
