According to "TheHistory of Union County" F497.U5 H6 1981X in the Denver PublicLibrary: Charles was listed as a private in the Civil War in CompanyK, of Union County, Ninety-Sixth Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Charleswas mustered into the army at Richwood, Ohio on 6 Aug 1862 at the ageof 17 and was discharged 7 Jul 1865. He saw three years of service,15 battles and skirmishes. The company participated in campaigns inKentucky, Mississippi (including Vicksburg), Louisiana, Alabama andArkansas. After considerable losses, in November 1864, Company E ofMarion County, Company K of Union County and Company B of Knox Countywere consolidated into Company C. Copies of Charles' military recordsindicate that he was detached with the Supply Train 20 Sep 1863. Sep& Oct 1864 detailed as Div. Teamster. His obituary says that duringpart of his enlistment he was detailed with an army corps train anddrove a six mule team in hauling ammunition, cotton and provisionsfrom New Orleans to Alexandria, LA. Charles Harvey was a farmer mostof his life. In the pension request dated 8 Oct 1907, he states he"lived in Union County Ohio until 1868 about Sept 21st came toNebraska in 1868 have made Nebraska my home since that date". Hisobituary says that he came to NE in 1869 and homesteaded near Sprague,NE, where he was married to Vienne Elmina Hadley. In his pensionrequest 22 May 1912 he lists residences Richwood, Ohio, "at MuskingumCo Ohio 1865 to Lincoln Nebr. 1868 to Homer, Iowa to Lincoln Nebr. toBrownville Nebr., to Lincoln Nebr. to Waumetta, Nebr. to WallaceNebr., then to Lincoln Nebr. then to Raymond" Nebr.
In Charles' "Soldier's Declaration for Invalid Pension" dated 5November 1891, Charles claimed "That he is now nearly totally unableto earn a support by manual labor by reason of the followingdisabilities: "Disease of Eyes" Disease of Liver & Kidneys andRheumatism". After the Civil War Charles was active in the Grand Armyof the Republic (GAR), Commander of the Nebraska GAR in 1935, and wasa member of the board of advisers at the time of his death. Duringthe 75th reunion of Gettysburg participants in 1938, he went to thecelebrations with his son, John Charles Kinney. As part of the
celebrations Charles and John Charles both received participantribbons with diamond studs. Part of the celebrations were inWashington, D.C. where Charles, or "Nebraska Charlie" as he was knownby R. Donald Kinney, a first cousin twice removed who lived in
Washington, D. C., walked and rode down Pennsylvania Avenue. (Somecopies of recollections of R. Donald Kinney, which he had transcribed,are held by Gregg Kinney in his records.) John Charles Kinney, hisgrandson, recalls him only as an old gruff man who walked with a caneor crutch. (Not surprising since Charles would have been 75 when JohnCharles was born.) According to pension records Charles suffered a"stroke of paralisis in left limb" in 1924. He died of enlargedprostate at the Veterans Hospital, Lincoln, NE. Charles outlived allthree of his wives. Of special note, Charles Harvey's third wife wasEliza Ann Smith, his grandson's mother's mother. [Charles HarveyKinney, John Charles Kinney, Ladella Dove (John's mother) and ElizaAnn Smith (Ladella's mother) were all living in the same home, soCharles married Eliza Ann.] Gregg Kinney has Charles Kinney's,military record, pension records, all remaining personal property.Personal recollections of John Kinney are recorded on micro-cassettetape. Pension, dated 12 Mar 1924, lists height as 5' 5 1/2"; complexion aslight; eyes as hazel; color of hair as dark.
