"Alanson was born at Cannan, CT, April 17, 1796. His parents removedto Willsboro, Essex Co., NY when he was a child of four years, and hisfather engaged in the iron business, taking ore from the hills nearby.But the iron business was not well supplied with ore there, and afterthe War of 1812 the family turned to lumbering and farming. Alansonwas Captain of the Thirty-seventh Regiment of Essec Co., NY Militia in1816. He married at Port Kendall, a small place then in existencenear Willsboro, Mar 15., 1820 Jane Sheldon, born in 1799, died Sept18, 1883, a daughter of Edmund Sheldon and Mary Ann Haight. Jane'sfather and mother were married at Willsboro in 1797. Alanson was athrifty manufacturer and farmer and an esteemed citizen. He died atWillsboro Feb. 2 1867."

"Bell's lameness was better and she taught school in the vicinity ofhome - riding to and from school in the coldest weather and over theroughest roads. There was no limit to her energy. She brought amelodeon, the first in town. Though small it was of sweet tone. Theselection of it was made by Uncle Charles Sheldon, an expert in thatline. Kate has long been noted for her skill in manipulating the keysof an accordion, and was the pride of any company of young people.Many a time she played and took part in a quadrille in our old diningroom, with Susan Hoffnagle, father and others. "Money Musk" and"Fisher's Hornpipe" were favorites. After the melodeon came; manywere the songs sung: "Home Again", "Jennie with the light brownhair", "Maggie by my side", "Wait for the wagon", "A little morecider", and Sunday School hymns for Sunday."

Arabella began teaching school at the tender age of 16, at theWillsboro Point School. She fell and injured her spine when she was18. She led the life of an invalid from then on. A photo of her inher later years shows her face aged and etched with suffering andpain. She lived her last 11 years with her sister, Mrs. George Rowley"Lizzie" Higby. and for the last 4 years of her life she wasbed-ridden from results of a stroke. From recollections by Mr. Frank Wickes, long resident ofWillsboro...who died at a dinner meeting before he could give hisrecollections on August 6, 1934. Notes were saved and published in 3parts in the Valley News in 1979.
"One of his daughters [Levi Higby] met with an accident in early lifewhich crippled and deformed her but she had the use of her hands andfeet and her mind was keen and bright. She taught school and when shewas at home was a main spoke in the wheel. Her name was, Arabella J.Higby. Her own people called her "Belle" and her school childrenalways called her "Miss Arabell." She had to do a great deal towardtaking care of her grandmother, Aunt Mary Sheldon, and, of course, itwas a good deal of work. One day when I was a boy about 12 years oldI was sent with a horse and buggy to get Aunt Mary and bring her tovisit my grandmother whose name was also Sheldon and who was arelative by marriage. "Miss Arabell" came over to get Aunt Mary readyto go with me. I had to wait while she combed her hair and put on aclean dress. The clean dress was a big loose dress called a MotherHubbard and Miss Arabell put it right over the dress Aunt Mary alreadyhad on. She said as she buttoned it up and pulled it down around AuntMary, "This Mother Hubbard covers a multitude of sins". Then we tookAunt Mary out of doors and got her in the buggy. But before I got inMiss Arabell said to me in an aside which Aunt Mary could not hear,"Dr. Chese says that he hopes and prays grandmother will live to a a100 years old, but I told him I hoped He would have a little mercy onthe rest of us."
