From "Story of an Old House" - Alice Higby Downs
"Grandfather Edmund Sheldon had become ill with dropsy. He was shortand fleshy, dark complexion and dark eyes. The dear old man who hadbeen so happy with his grandchildren, and woven little baskets forthem and loved them - which was best of all - was too ill to lie down.He sat in his chair, suffering for months as no mortal can describe, night and day, day and night, through extremely hot weather. Mother, with all her daily cares, attended to them faithfully, but at twilightwould walk, oftentimes, down to her old home to watch the night outwith her dealy beloved father. All the children did their utmost tocomfort and aid him and Grandmother. His sufferings ended August 23,1850, at the age of 81."
Ibid., pg. 16:
"Edmund Sheldon possessed a complete cobbler's outfit and knew how touse the hammer and the pegs. Many a little shoe was made by him forhis little grandchildren, and the awls, hammers, scalping knife, lastsand leathers were often inspected by them; while to sit in his leathercovered seat was one of the pleasures that fell to one and all of thechildren."
Ibid., pg 61:
"Grandfather had left a will leaving a portion of the farm to each ofhis daughters, but the will proved to be without date and was, consequently, not valid. A compromise was made and Oscar paid thesisters the sum of $350.00 each, and he retained the farm. He soonbecame dissatisfied, however, with farm life, and made an exchangewith his cousin, Edmund Hoffnagle, taking the Grist Mill at the Fallsand the house and lot adjoining ours on the north. Poor Grandmother -her heart was almost broken at the thought of leaving the farm and oldhome. She had a life lease and remained there for some time. CousinEdmund's family doing all they could to cheer her. Oscar erected atwo-story front to the old building he had taken and fitted up the twonorth rooms for his mother, which she came to."
