From "History of an Old House" - Alice Higby Downs pg. 53
"All the children of Grandfather and Grandmother Sheldon were marriedexcept Oscar. He was a student as well as an active businessman, wellred in history. He had traced the Sheldon ancestry to a great extent.Through the long evenings, while the father dozed and the motherknitted, he would sit at the table and read, study and ask questions. He had charge of the farm.
Visiting in Vermont among his Mother's kindred, it was suggested byAllen Martin that he select a wife from one of the families of theiracquaintance. A Miss Cordelia Gilbert was mentioned. The matter wassuggested to her also and a meeting arranged. As a naturalconsequence, both were reserved and embarrassed. Miss Sarah, ayounger sister, came in from making a call; full of animation andjollity; and her presence was a great relief. On the followingmorning Oscar met Miss Sarah while she was lighting the fire, and madea proposal to her. Thus the compact was sealed on the instant. OnJune 24, 1847, they were married at the home of the bride'sstepfather, Patrick Clark, in Georgia, VT. As relatives of the groom,James and Eliza Bosworth were guests at the wedding and accompaniedthe bride and groom to Montreal."
