From "History of an Old House" - Alice Higby Downs
"Edmund Sheldon married Mary Ann Haight, youngest daughter of Caleband Elizabeth (Allen) Haight on Feb. 5th in 1797. She crossed thelake from Ferrisburgh to visit friends in Willsborough, and at theearly age of sixteen was married to Edmund Sheldon at the home of hissister, Mrs. Anna Hoffnagle to whose home they had gone for a ride. From that time on she was one of the most prominent women in the town. She has been described as fine looking at that time, well developed, energetic, of much animation, independent and self reliant. She musthave been endowed with strong characteristics to be willing to assumethe many and varied responsibilities which were to be borne by her inthat large home and which she so faithfully and conscientiouslyconducted for so many years.
Riding in the saddle was one of Mary Ann Sheldon's accomplishments. On one occasion she rode without a saddle. While the members of herfamily were at church at the Falls she discovered smoke issuing fromone of the out buildings; knowing she could not battle with a fire insuch close proximity to numerous other wood buildings, she decided tocall for help. Leading a horse from the stable she leaped to his backand rode toward the Falls with all her might, crying "Fire! Fire!".Aid from an adjoining farm came and the fire was extinguished beforemuch damage was done, and she was highly praised for her courage andforethought. She occasionally went on a visit to Dutchess County, andfrequently went to Ferrisburgh, VT. With a baby in arms she wouldcross on the ferry to Charlotte, mount again her horse and proceed tothe 'burgh to visit her sisters."
From the Rev. Alanson D. Barber - Pastor of the Congregational Church:
"RESPECT TO MRS. SHELDON
'As the days of a tree are the days of my people and mine elect shalllong enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labor in vain norbring forth trouble, for they are the seed of the blessed of the Lord, and their offspring with them
Such is the declaration of the rapt prophet concerning future things,as he, carried forward by the Devine Power, stands in the midst ofthem as in the midst of things present and real. He here sees whathas been promised, what the race has ever longed for and what is sureto come.
A pledge of meaning is given in the gathering together of children,grand-children and friends at the home of Mrs. Mary A. Sheldon inWillsborough on the 30th day of January, 1871; to pay due respect toour venerable Mother and celebrate her ninetieth birthday.
Mrs. Sheldon is one that God hath honored both in lengthening out herdays and surrounding her with numerous, truly filial and highlyrespected family. She looks upon the fourth generation and counts asher direct descendants one hundred and four souls, seventy-two of whomare living. Her sons fill important stations in both church and stateand her daughter - they are as "corner stones polished after thesimilitude of a palace".
Her own sons and daughters are nine, of whom two are gone. Of theremaining, five with a goodly representation from all the branches ofthe widely dispersed family came together as about stated. Thoughunexpected by Mrs. Sheldon, she received them as only a Mother of heryears and experience could; and gave them full opportunity to satisfytheir filial pride and affection. Clear in all her faculties, and ingood health, so that she still keeps her own home; this mother bidsfair to give her sons and daughters many more such rare opportunities. That she may live many days, to be as she is now, to them and all anexample of patience, cheerfulness and peace; coming home late toHeaven is the hope and prayer in which all who were there heartilyunits."

"the reunion mentioned above was held in the building erected by OscarSheldon, north of the Higby homestead. Rev. Mr. Barber formerly fromWilliston, VT was pastor of the Congregational Church and occupiedpart of the Sheldon home. His family were devotedly attached to"Grandmother" and were very kind in many ways. scores of people intown called her "Aunt Mary".

Ibid., pg. 61
"Grandfather [Edmund Sheldon] had left a will leaving a portion of thefarm to each of his daughters, but the will proved to be without dateand was, consequently, not valid. A compromise was made and Oscar[Sheldon] paid the sisters the sum of $350.00 each, and he retainedthe farm. He soon became dissatisfied, however, with farm life, andmade an exchange with his cousin, Edmund Hoffnagle, taking the GristMill at the Falls and the house and lot adjoining our on the north.Poor Grandmother [Mary Ann Haight Sheldon] - her heart was almostbroken at the thought of leaving the farm and old home. She had alife lease and remained there for some time. Cousin Edmund's familydoing all they could to cheer her. Oscar erected a two-story front tothe old building he had taken and fitted up the two north rooms forhis mother, which she came to.
It is a source of regret that I did not more fully realize the greatchange it was to her, the great sacrifice she made in her old age, sothat she might be nearer to her children, her sons and daughters. Howmuch, not only I, but all her grandchildren, might have done to makethe change seem a happy one if we had only known how much she neededus to run in often and talk with her. We did go in, and Mother [ElizaSheldon Higby] and Bell [Arabella Higby] were doing constantly forher, but the younger ones might have done more if they had only known- what we learn when we become older!"
from the papers of Rev. Charles N. Wilder. (1898) - perhaps anobituary or notes from the service.
"ALMOST ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD
Mrs. Mary Sheldon who died in Willsboro, NY on Saturday, Sept. 25,1880, was one hundred years old, lacking only four months and fivedays. Mrs. Sheldon was born in Dutchess County, New York, nearly ninemonths before Cornwallis' surrender. She was a child of almost threeyears when the treaty was signed at Paris, and the United States ofAmerica took its place among the governments of the earth. Thedeceased had nine children, six of whom are now living. The averageage of the six is about seventy-five years. Five of them were at thefuneral. Among them was the first born, now eighty years of age, whocame forty miles to attend her Mother's funeral. The funeral tookplace at the house of Levi Higby, Esq., who married the seconddaughter of Mrs. Sheldon. Mr. and Mrs. Higby are venerable people.Eleven years ago they celebrated their Golden Wedding.
Deacon Aiken E. Sheldon of the Baptist Church of Essex, is a son ofMrs. Sheldon. Fifty-four grandchildren have been born, fifty-onegreat-grandchildren, and six great, great grandchildren. In all thereare 120 descendants. Mrs. Sheldon was a Quaker, retaining to the endof her life her love for the sect and living a most exemplary life. Alarge number of her descendants are Christian people, honored membersof evangelistic churches. The aged mother found great joy in thisfact. An old man of more than eighty years told me yesterday that heremembered Mrs. Sheldon when he was a little boy, and that he hadknown her all his life; and, said he, "I consider her the most perfectlady I ever knew". She had lived in Willsboro for eighty-five years. Her husband was Edmund Sheldon who died in 1850 at the age ofeighty-two years. The father of Edmund Sheldon was Joseph Sheldon, who with Abraham Aiken, was the first purchaser of land from Mr.Gilliland for permanent occupation. The settled in Willsboro inMarch, 1784. Daniel Sheldon was the first Town Clerk of Willsboro.Willsboro and Essex have a good record of longevity. It was stated atthe funeral that eight persons have died in the town since July 15thlast. Their united ages were 625 years, and the average age was 79.There are now living in Willsboro twelve persons who are eighty yearsold and many more close on to ninety."
