Birth place originally from J. H. Smith who also gives the following:David moved his family from Fairfield, VT about 1827, and probablycame to Wisconsin in 1880. According to a cousin, when the familycame to Wisconsin they wanted David Hoyt to come with the women on thetrain, as he was in his 90's, but he wouldn't ride in one of those newfangled contraptions and road all the way in the back of a wagon. Oldfamily tree papers from which Smith worked, states that David's fullname was Jacob David, but was called David. HHH lists him as David.
Carpenter gave birth date and date of marriage to Mary and adds thisconcerning the spelling of the surname. The 1850 census for ClintonCo., NY, town of Ellenburgh, gives his name as David Hoit. The name isspelled Hoit until the 1880 census in WI when Oscar (son) spelled hislast name Hoyt.
Link with Gillis who writes - David moved his family from Fairfield,VT about 1827. It is possible that he first moved to the northeastportion of NY because his daughter Ruamy married and resided inPlattsburg, NY and another daughter Phebe married and lived inOntario, Canada which is just north of Clinton Co., NY.
A story from a cousin. "I called Arlean the other night and we had agood talk. She says when our family came to Wisconsin that theywanted David Hoyt to come with the women on the train as he was 98 buthe wouldn't ride in one of those new fangled contraptions and road allthe way in the back of a wagon.
I was once told that David Hoyt was 101 when he died. Arlean told methe other night that David is buried in the Prairie Farm Cemetery andthat the caretaker showed them where he was buried but there is nomarker. This is all heresay and I would like a little proof like adeath certificate and cemetery records. Then if every thing checks outI would like to see that a marker was placed over the grave of the oldgentleman who rode all the way to Wisconsin from "upstate New York" inthe back of a wagon because he wouldn't ride in one of those newfangled contraptions."
David probably came to Wisconsin in 1880, which would have made him93/94 years of age. He died on February 5, 1882 at the age of 95/96.
From Pension Claim, S.C. 25520 Based upon the War of 1812 Service ofDavid Hoit or Hoyt. (spelled both ways) He enlisted in FranklinCounty, Vermont, served from September 10, 1814 to September 16, 1814as a private in Captain Benjamin Wooster's company of Vermont militiaand was in the battle of Plattsburg. The soldier resided in Fairfield,Vermont, about three years; at Ellenburg, NY about fifty-three yearsand in April, 1880 moved to Eau Galle, Dunn County, Wisconsin. DavidHoit was all a pension on his application executed July 1, 1880 atwhich time he was aged ninety-four years and a resident of Eau Galle,Wisconsin. (where his son, Oscar B. Hoit lived).
