Baptism data from Hoyt's Issue Fall 1995 page 1225. Source NEHGS.
Hoyt's Issue Spring 1988 article states he left behind an orphaneddaughter aged six.
From HHH (paraphrased) - On the advice and under the instruction ofhis uncle, Gen. Epaphras Hoyt, he early fitted himself for a civilengineer. In Dec. 1846 he enlisted in a company of ordnance under Gen.Scott. He assisted in throwing the first shell at Vera Cruz and thelast one at Mexico City, having participated in every battle but oneof Scott's division. He was also one of the small party who ascendedthe volcano of Popocatpetl with Lieut. Stone and planted the stars andstripes on its summit, an elevation of nearly 17,800 ft. From Sep.1848 to Apr. 1849 he was in Deerfield, MA and then until Apr 1852 wasin Randolph Co., IL. From IL. he went to CA, reaching the gold regionin 70 days. In Jun 1853 he joined Col. Stevens' Exploring Expeditionas assistant to Lieut. Saxton in taking scientific observations andsuveying the northern route for the Pacific Railroad. In Nov 1853 heagain returned to Deerfield until Feb 1856. On 2-20-1856 he startedfor Kansas. At Lexington, MO an armed mob compelled him to surrender anumber of rifles but he had taken the precaution to send an essentialpart of each gun by another route therefore rendering them useless tothe mob. In Kansas he took an active part in the Free State cause andwas selected by the citizens of Lawrence KS to remonstrate with acompany of 'border ruffians" led by Capt. Saunders and camped about 7miles away. US officers assured him of safety and he went on hismission alone and unarmed. His mutliated body, partially buried wasfound by his friends the next day. It is said that he had an amicabletalk with Capt. Saunders, but was followed from their camp by 2 of theruffians and murdered. Those who knew him best said that he wasincapable of fear - "too brave".
