From HHH - On the Fairfield probate records is the following: "AnInventory of the Estate of Jesse Hayt of Norwalk now gone Over andJoined himself with ye Enemies of the United States. Apprized by usthe subscribers According to ye present Value thereof in ContinentalBill," Jan. 13, 1779. 1327 pounds 4 shillings. In 1776 he accompaniedthe British fleet to New York as Admiral Howe's pilot. This act gavegreat displeasure to his brothers at Norwalk, and he was compelled tosend a flag of truce to N. to have his wife and child. conveyed to NewYork City. From N.Y. he removed his family to Oyster Bay, L. I. Inthe autumn of 1782 his wife and five chil. were sent to Annapolis,N.S., and he joined them there in the spring of 1783. He was a farmerand colonel of militia; a man of sterling character and a goodcitizen.
In an e-mail from Bill Tufts Aug 12 2001 is given -
-joined the British as a coastal pilot in 1776. Months later, while hewas gone, about 50 mounted men attacked his house firing musket ballsinto it. They broke in, smashed everything, destroyed clothing & lefthis wife, Mary and the 5 children naked in the cold. It was 17February, 1777. One of the children soon died & the rest were"harried through town" & finally sent to N.Y. -(Ref. 333, pp. 81/2)

-settled on the Sissiboo River. In 1787, while writing ofdisillusionment in their new home, he wrote of a ship just built, butit was too late in the year to launch it. He hoped to be captain ofit in the spring. -(Ref. 333, p. 165)
