Copy of an article which was published in the Essex Co. Republican:(supposedly written by Solomon Clark, Corr. of Essex Co. Republican)
"Levi Higby and wife celebrated their sixtieth anniversary of marriageon Monday, Sept 15th. [1869]. Mr. Higby was married on his 22ndbirthday and is now 82 years of age. He is still genial, sensible andthe best of company for the young as well as the old. His excellentwife, but three years younger than himself, retains all the sweetnessof temper, purity of heart, and no little share of the beauty thatcharacterized her youth and early womanhood. It is said that shenever looked so positively handsome as on the occasion of the lateanniversary. She wore a rich black silk, a beautiful white cap and anelegant white lace scarf which was the gift of her daughter, Mrs.Eliza Bosworth of Hillsdale, Michigan.
Mr. and Mrs. Higby passed their long and useful life among us, and itis gratifying to us all to see them in prospering health, givingfriends the hope that they may reach the later anniversary of theDiamond Wedding."

"Christmas day in 1845, Mother had the nicest present of anyone in thefamily - at least she thought so. going home from spending the nightwith my playmate, Orthonette Crocker; I ran up to Mother's chamber andsaw her in bed. She smiled, and said, "Come and see what a nicepresent Santa Claus brought me," and she turned down the spread, I sawa live baby! They named her Mary Elizabeth Franklia - the first forher grandmother, Mary Ann Haight Sheldon, the second was suggested byUncle Smith Fairchild in memory of his first wife, and the third for"the little boy who died". She was called 'Frankie' at first, then'Frank', then 'Lizzie', then "Mary Lizzie', and now 'Aunt Lizzie',each change in her name denoting some developing change in hercharacter.
Ibid.,pg. 52
"When Mary Lizzie was one year old and just learning to walk, she camevery near to a hot stove and fearing that she was going to fall, putout her little hand and burned herself on the corner of the stove. Before anyone could reach her the flesh was burned deeply, and as aresult, her first finger was drawn down from the middle joint. ThoughDr. Barton treat it; splints were used and every precaution taken, thecord was too badly injured.
She had begun to talk and in her attempts to say 'Alice', she calledit 'Atty' and 'Ity', the latter name. Later on it was 'Ite', whichwas used for many years by the elder sisters. She was a very agilechild; running, climbing and dancing about the big front room to hershadow - her partner in the long evenings."
Ibid., pg 80
"Mary Lizzie was attending school in New York (City) during the war of1861-65; living with Charles and Sarah Jane. In one of her lettersshe wrote of the great excitement and rioting scenes in the streets.Charles was a member of the Union League, and the members remained attheir Club House, mobs were crowding through the streets armed withclubs and stones, and hooting, jeering and yelling. A man was on ascaffold, painting; the crowd forced him down from the building andbore him along with the rest. While hundreds of thousands of soldierswere in camps or the fields, or marching on to battle, sentiment wasdivided so in the north that cities seemed to be hot beds of treasonand anarchy."
Ibid.,pg. 82
"Mary Lizzie chose the 15th of March, 1866, for her wedding eve and itproved a fearfully stormy one. The rain came down in torrents. Butall was bright within doors as she and George Anderson Rowley wereunited in marriage by the Rev. Stephen A. Barnard. The bride's dresswas white dotted Swiss. Among the guests were Mr. and Mrs. DanielRowley, son Henry and daughter Emma, and Elbert Smith and wife.
Several years before, this couple had stood side by side whilereceiving the rite of baptism by the same pastor in the CongregationalChurch.
In Dec. 1866, a little son was born to them and named CharlesHamilton. [each parent contributed the name of a dead sibling to thischild: Charles from Charles E. Rowley who had died age 9 months - andHamilton, for Mary Lizzie's beloved brother who was killed in theCivil War] They had a cosy home near the Rowley homestead"
