Letter from Anita Young Hersey's Uncle Jim with history written byCharles Young, her father's brother (dated 1959):" Father was ateamster he drive a four horse team in company with others from wherethey lived to Philadelphia taking country produce out and store goodson return. His father's given name was John . (This would be Anita'sgr gr grandfather.JT) He told me he saw General Washington. There wasa company on horseback went past their place one day there was severalyounger men and he thinks Lafayette was in the crowd. His father was ablacksmith. He made rifles. He could bleed, pull teeth and do much tomake himself useful in a new country. Father learned the trade. Therewas no schools. When he was twenty one he could not write. About thistime Father went to Lansing (2 letter word illegible. JT) Tompkins Co.NY built a shop and worked at his trade. About this time he marriedAnn D. youngest daughter of Mr. Buch, Grandfather of the Daniel Buchfurniture dealer of Lansing, Mi. They had three children then moved ina covered wagon to Ashland Ohio built a house and shop there andworked about three years. Then moved to Medina Co. bought a farm gotinto trouble signing notes then sold paid up the notes and moved toLayfayette bought lot house and shop worked there about four yearsJames was born in Lafayette. Then sold out and bought farm five milesfrom Medina Co. seat of Medina Co. Brother Jim got his wife here MissDyer Then sold out moved to Seneca Co. bought farm of 80 acres workedpart of time at Green Springs at his trade. Then sold farm and movedto Bellevue Huron Co.- lived here one year then moved to OberlinLorain Co. I worked with brother John a big farm near Bellvieu MySister Melind kept house for me I worked there one year then moved toOberlin Lorain Co. bought farm of 80 acres built a barn and gotmarried. Had 2 strong healthy girls. Then traded farms with Chas Deyowho married my Sister Melinda. She had one child by him then motherand child both died. Then I moved to Mich after one year got on myfarm Stayed there until my family were all grown up then sold the farmand been visiting most of the time since. Father bought a nice houseand lot in Parma. Mother and Matty died in Parma. Then Father marriedagain and bought a farm near Parma lived thare His second wife and Evadied thare Eva married James Hammill and had one child which grew upand became a good teacher Father lived with his boys after his secondwife's death and died in Chicago and was buried in the family lot inChapel cemetery. John sold his farm and moved to Kalama zoo and diedthare and him and wife lie in the family lot in Chapel cemetery. Theirdaughter grew up married a baptist minister and had a fine family.James was our reailroad man he died early was buried in Chicago left alarge family of boys and one girl."
From Anita Young Hersey: She wondered if the Youngs were originallyPennsylvania Dutch- Yungs, Mennonites from DEU. Lansing, NY is verynear Ithaca, where Nicholas built a shop and worked at his trade-blacksmithing, which he learned from his father John.
#957-(2/92) from Wallace Nolin- 1800 census Pa., Northhampton Township- shows John Young, 1 free white male age 26-45; 2 free whitefemales under age 10; 1 free white female age 16-26.
- He is confused (and rightly so!) about when and where John died - Ihad said that he died while visiting his son, Nicholas, in Seneca Co.,Ohio. Yet elsewhere, it says that he died in Parma , Mi. as did hiswife. No dates for his death but Susannah supposedly died in 1807,which means either he remarried and had 10 more children or the deathdate is incorrect John would have had to die in Seneca Co. between1853 & 1855. And why was he buried in Parma, Mi. since the Nicholasfamily had not moved there yet....... Good questions!!!
982- from Aunt Evelyn (a note)- John may be buried on farm near GreenSprings, Ohio- Aunt Evelyn asked about the "graveyard 1 rod square"when they talked to the present owners- they said they didn't knowwhere it was- the only thing that they had ever heard was that anIndian was buried somewhere on the farm. There is a small countrycemetery about 1/2 mile north of the farm - old & overgrown.
#982- from Aunt Evelyn- 1790 census, Norhthampton Co., Pa.: NicholasYoung males 10-16(4), 16-26( 1), 45 & over (1); female s (3) (noreference to age). 1790- seven children ?( for Nicholas Young, Sr.)-this is per Aunt Evelyn (3/92)
#150- from ??? (Betsie Joedicker)- lists his birthdate as July 4 ,1769.
- mentions a John Young b 16 OCT 1768 in Ryton, Durham, England .Lists some John Youngs' m to: Susan Walker; Susannah Bland; SusanGodfrey; and Susanna Appleby.
notes per Jack Hammill 1/00: Claimed to have seen George Washingtonand the Marquis de Lafayette while living near Philadelphia . Thetime periods during which Washington and Lafayette could have beenseen together were 1777-1782 and in 1784. John Young's age duringthis period was 8 yrs. old in 1777 to 15 yrs. ol d in 1784, so thestory is plausible.
- name was also Johannes; came to Hinsdale, NY around 1834 with 2 ofhis sons and a daughter, Rachel (she married George Swarts).
- his wife's name is given as Susanna (no last name); he moved fromHamilton Twp. (presumably to NY) after the 1820 Census; he purchased32 acres from his father in the township on 13 June 180 3 and sold thesame parcel to his brother Nicholas on 15 June 1809. Along with hisbrother he also coinherited his father's farm in 1807.
Will of Nicholas Young, 30 May 1805, Northampton Co., PA Will Book 4,pp 294-296, County Records (R.G. 47), Microfilm Reel 4035 : Nicholaswilled his estate to the following heirs:
