James was a railroad land grant agent. She said Aunt Evelyn met a manduring a visit and they got talking about genealogy and all, and theman asked the name of the ancestor in the railroad business in Canada.Upon being told the name (James Nicholas Young), he said he'd read ofhim recently in a book. The book related the fact that his partner haddefrauded him and I gather got control of the business away from him.He couldn't remember the name of the book.
Info from Celina Huston- "Your great grandfather built railroads atthe turn of the century - some were run down and abandoned, others hetook over to finish. I wish I knew more about his life to tell youbecause he was a very interesting & lovable man. Aunt Louise used tosay she rejoiced when she'd see the children's grandpa come down thestreet - especially if they were crying. He'd pick them up and talk tothem, love them alot & they'd stop crying & started smiling andlaughing. He died before I was born while away on a business trip. Hewould have died a rich man had he not invested unwisely in a companythat didn't pan out the way he thought it would. He was a telegrapher& one day at a railroad station where he was stopping over for lunch,he heard the telegraph key ticking out a message for him. When thetelegrapher brought it to his table, he told him what it said. Anothertale I was told that while in Hamilton, he was hit in the head by arailroad tie that was being swung into place & was knocked into a bodyof water. Even though he hadn't swum for years, when he came to he wasswimming & saved his own life.
A story per Celina Huston: it was about my great grandfather and greatgrandma (I'am assuming she means these two): It is about a horse theyowned. It seems he'd get in the buggy & drive to the
Rock Island train station in the morning near by. He'd get out & patthe horse & tell him to go home so that my great grandma could havethe horse's services for the day. In the evening, the situation wouldbe reversed.

He was admitted to the bar in 1873 at age about 26. He had beenstudying evenings while working, " so as to be able to take up thecourse of law at Ann Arbor. He completed his work after his marriage."More interesting are how he and Mary Hayes met, and what the work wasthat he had been doing. Mary, whose father's residence at the time ofthe marriage was at Ypsilanti, had graduated from Ypsilanti NormalSchool and met James in Parma where she went to teach. In Parma Jameshad been working as telegraph operator (=station master) at theMichigan Central
station. At the time of the marriage he had the position of Agent(i.e. station master) at Gibson, Indiana. Gibson is about 275 milessouth of Parma.

Relations in Hamilton...........HE FOUGHT A GOOD FIGHT.........Few menhave been more prominently before the Hamilton public during the pasteight years than Mr. James N. Young, the original projector of theToronto, Hamilton & Buffalo Railway. He has now completed all thebusiness which has made him a resident of this thriving burg duringall those years, and returns to Chicago this afternoon. Mr. Youngfirst came to Hamilton in the fall of 1889. He was accompanied byseveral New York and Chicago men who were interested in his railwayenterprise, but all withdrew from it long before it was brought tocompletion. The City Council of 1889 was the celebrated "Star
Chamber" body, and by it the T., H. & B. bonus proposition of Mr.Young and his confreras was laid over until 1890. The first bonusby-law to grant $275,000 to the new road went through flying in thelatter year, and the famous "vestibuled scraper" operations werecommenced on the northern route, via the Caroline street gully, etc.Mr. Young was not successful in financing his scheme, and afterspending a little pot of his own money he abandoned operations and thebonus expired. In 1892 the project was revived, another bonus by-lawwas put through, and then the city waited in vain for the road. In1894 a third by-law was passed, this time, however, for only $225,000,and at
considerable personal sacrifice Mr. Young secured the co-operation ofthe Beckley-Peabody syndicate, and eventurally the road was completed,including an unexpected connection with
Toronto via the C. P. R. spur to the Toronto branch of the GrandTrunk. In well-informed circles it is alleged that Mr. Young leavesHamilton no richer, and possibly somewhat poorer, than when he camehere. This morning some of Mr. Young's personal friends gathered atthe T., H. & B. offices in the Hunter street depot to say good-bye.Among those who made short speeches were Mayor Colquhoun; Mssrs. J.Turnbull, cashier of the Bank of Hamilton; H. N. Kittson, Alex McKay,ex- M. P., Adam Zimmerman, J. M. Harris, H. R. Leyden, H. Carscallen,Q. C., M. P. P., E. D. Cahill, F. F. Backus, and E. Fisher generalsuperintendent of the T. H. & B. Accompanying the speeches wereseveral little gifts as souvenirs of Mr. Young's stay here. Most ofthe speakers intimated that when Mr. Young returns here on a visit inSeptember the citizens should tender him a banquet. Mr. Young does notreitre from business by any means. He is at present engaged in arailway contract in Kansas, and expects shortly to have another underway in Texas. "

(copy of newspaper clipping- name and date missing - obituary of JamesN. Young)" Mr. Jas. N. Young was born in Oberlin Co., Ohio, in 1847.Later his parents moved to Michigan, where he
spent his boyhood on a farm and attended the district school. When thewar broke out he made a desperate attempt to enlist in the army, butfailed to do so, owing to the efforts of the family physician, who wassent after him, and who succeeded in convincing the authorities thatthe would-be soldier was under-age. He learned telegraphy, and studiedevenings while working as operator at the Michigan Central station atParma, so as to be able to take up the course in law at Ann Arbor. Hecompleted his work after his marriage and was admitted to the bar in1873, at which time he began the practice of law in Chicago. Becominginterested in railroading, he was associated with the building of theChicago and Atlantic (now Erie) road into Chicago. He was one of theoriginal promoters of the Calumet Terminal R. R. and later wasinterested in railroad
building in Kansas and Ontario, Canada. At the time that his healthbroke down last October, he was president and general manager of theDenver, Enid and Gulf R. R. with headquarters at Enid, Oklahoma. Hisdeath occurred on March 22, at La Jolla, Ca., where he had beenstaying for several months, hoping to regain his strength. The bodywill be brought home for burial and the interment will be at MountHope. "

All data from Tuccinardi. James died after being in the hospital fromDec.1st to the 12th. He went into ICU on Dec. 8th. Cause of deathwas pneumonia. He died at St. Peter's Hospital. James was crematedand his ashes were scattered in the rainforest of Olympic NationalPark.
